About this list:

It's been a long hard road to find safe, USA-made, fun, artistic toys for my nieces and nephews. So here is my list so far. Hopefully, I'll have a long enough list to shop from for Christmas next year!

Geometrical jigsaw

First to recommend

Description

I wouldn't ordinarily list a $54 puzzle, but I am obsessed with puzzles. I should clarify, I am obsessed with finding quality puzzles not made in China (this is German) and the stain is water-based. Great for three dimensional thinking. It's one darn puzzle that he kid would have to wrestle from me!

Earthopoly

First to recommend

Description

Is there anything more earth-friendly? What a great alternative to the typical lets-get-as-much-as-we-can-and crush-our-competition game.

Become caretakers (not OWNERS) of natural wonders. Increase the worth by collecting carbon credits for clean air. Jail would be pleasant compared to being sent to the dump! Made in USA

All the paper is recyclable.
The ink is vegetable oil-based ink.
The game pieces are either made by nature or completely recyclable.
Every aspect is sustainable down to the compostable shrink wrap it comes in.

pogibabies :: Sophie Winter Hat

First to recommend

Description

Why do I love this? Let me count the ways...warm fleece, flower, shields snow from eyes, keeps small ears warm, velcro chin strap, matching boots if desired. Ok, so that is six good reasons. I see the future for my nieces, besides the fact that one is names Sophie!

These blocks are absolutely gorgeous! Everything is done right in Northern Michigan. The woods comes from sustainable maple tree forests and the printing is non-toxic.
This would make a wonderfully, thoughtful baby shower gift.

The Nature Conservancy: Adopt an Acre

First to recommend

Description

For the Rescue the Reef program. You get lots of stuff for $50 bucks an acre (including a subscription to the Nature Conservancy).

If aren't already aware, the world's coral reefs are in danger of becoming a thing of the past (exaggeration? --no). Rising temps cause coral bleaching, and since reefs are an important ecosystem, all the other animals that depend on it will die also. Input "coral bleaching" into the search engine and take a look.

Again, great idea for gifts or kids and adults.

Eco-Energy Radios

Description

Bring on the solar. Too bad they don't have a solar-powered Sirius radio or CD player, but another good start. Great for backyards, hiking, camping or just inquisitive kids (or adults :) Three ways to charge: sun, hank-crank, plug-in. 30 seconds of cranking = 35 minutes of Dave Matthews. The rechargable NiMH battery can hold 20 hours of playtime. AM/FM/SW/LW

Fuel Cell Car Science Kit

2 people recommended this item

Description

I know, everyone is going to rush out to get one of these - don't lie! Uses water not batteries.

Yes, we could use the hydrogen in water if it were easily accessible. Fuel cells would be the answer, so this is exciting.
