Briggs and Stratton 5550 Watt Electric Generator
First to recommend
Description
I love this one for three reasons:
First, it's actually affordable. It's cheaper than Coleman, McCulloch, Mitsubishi, Yamaha, etc.
Secondly, while it's cheaper, it's hardly cheap. Briggs wisely added pneumatic wheels and selected an engine with a Dura-Bore cast iron sleeve.
What's that? Cast iron is a much stronger material, which better resists wear and tear. Bottom line. It tends to last a lot longer.
Finally, it has a seven (7) gallon gas tank. Most 5,000 watt generators have a 5 gallon tank. You'll definitely appreciate the difference when the gas tank doesn't go dry in the middle of the night. (via Electric Generators Direct)

Briggs & Stratton 6200 Watt Electric Start Generator

Description
This, my friends, is the best mid-sized emergency generator for the money.
It's powerful. It's durable. It's affordable.
Best of all, you can start it with a touch of a button.
It's hard to come by a mid-sized generator with electric start. Electric start is usually reserved for extra large generators between 7,500 and 15,000 watts.
This model generates 6,200 watts. Plenty of juice to power all of your survival appliances and a bunch more.
This model is been very popular with elderly folks, who greatly appreciate the ease of electric start. (via Electric Generators Direct)

Coleman Powermate 7000 Watt Premium Plus Generator w/ Honda PM0497000

Extremely popular generator because of the Honda engine.
It's hard to come by large emergency generators with a Honda engine at an affordable price.
So hard, in fact, that this model is often on backorder for up to 6-8 weeks.
Electric Generators Direct just got a bunch in-stock, and they are now available for Same-Day Shipment! (via Electric Generators Direct)
