Strictly Ballroom

4 people recommended this item

Description

There was a trio of Australian films in the 90s that won me over completely - Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, Muriel's Wedding and Strictly Ballroom. Perhaps the #3 of the three, Strictly Ballroom is nonetheless a charming, wonderful little film, managing to combine the bittersweet romance of Muriel's Wedding and the glitter of Priscilla.

Fran (Tara Morice), an awkward ugly duckling who spends her time hanging around a dance studio, is roped into a seemingly hopeless situation when she is recruited to partner Scott (Parul Mercurio) a dance champ who is determined to buck the rigid confines of the competitive dance world. It's a combination of familiar stories, sure but its also uniquely charming, dazzling, dark and funny.

Sin City - Unrated (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

2 people recommended this item

Description

Incredibly cool and unlike anything you've ever seen before! Not for the faint of heart, and certainly not a family movie, but its cast is chockful of stars = just unlike you've ever seen them.

Prostitutes, gangsters, sociopaths and dirty cops - visually astounding in cartoonish black, white and red aesthetic. It's extremely violent and deals with some very gruesome subject matter, but for those unoffended by such things, it's funny, cool and very, very watchable.

However implausible the plot may be, it's still a sweet, funny and romantic movie. I've always adored Jason Lee no matter what role he plays!

Shaun of the Dead

Description

A must-see for fans of the zombie movie genre. A must-see for fans of British comedy. A must-see for fans of horror movies. A must-see for fans of funny movies!

Sharply funny, satirical and loving, cool and an introduction to one of the most exciting film-making teams since the Boyle/Hodges/Macdonald team behind Trainspotting. Simon Pegg is Shaun, a going-nowhere loser who's biggest dilemna is winning back his longtime girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield) until he wakes up one morning to a London overrun with zombies. Together with his slacker buddy Ed (Nick Frost) he sets out to rescue Liz, his mum (Penelope Wilton) and their hangers-on (Liz's flatmates and his mum's husband (the always excellent Bill Nighy) and wait out the invasion in their favourite pub, The Winchester.

Oh, and you'll learn everything you need to know about killing zombies!

Hot Fuzz

6 people recommended this item

Description

A by-the-books, overachieving London cop is "promoted" to the seemingly sleepy English countryside by colleagues who feel threatened by his work ethic. Starring the wonderful pair of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the rural cop he is partnered with, Hot Fuzz is a wickedly funny, bang-on satire/homage of the buddy-flick (ie. Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys).

If you've seen Pegg, Frost and director, Edgar Wright's previous film, Shaun of the Dead, you'll love Hot Fuzz. It's hilarious, extremely clever and the type of film you'll want to watch over and over again just to catch everything.

Atonement

Description

Stunning, haunting, romantic, heartbreaking and compelling. This is an epic romantic drama that isn't bodice-swellingly annoying or forgotten as soon as you leave the theatre (or switch on the lamp next to the couch).

The cinematography perfectly conveys the hazy, hot summer days in the English countryside, then the stark, cold clarity of World War II. James McAvoy, one of the most exciting young actors working today, and the bewitchingly lovely Keira Knightley are perfect as the interrupted lovers, and the youngest actress to play Briony Tallis, Saoirse Ronan is a revelation.

Sumptuous, beautiful and one of the most haunting love stories I've ever seen. The film perfectly captures the novel (by Ian McEwan).

Fargo

5 people recommended this item

Description

A chilling, amusing and near perfect film with enough quirks and foibles to give the audience a sense of otherworldiness. Film noir set in a rural part of the country and the hero is a very pregnant, tough-as-nails cop. Who else but the Coen Brothers could come up with something like this?

I grew up pretty close to North Dakota, just over the border in Saskatchewan. So much about Fargo hit home for me when I first saw it. Saskatchewan winters are just like this, and while the accents where I come from aren't quite as distinctive, they're still very similar.
