Shallow Grave

First to recommend

Description

Danny Boyle is one of my absolute favourite directors. Every film he makes is in a different classic genre, and he encapsulates each one perfectly while adding his own twist to it.

Shallow Grave was his first film and paired with screenwriter John Hodge and producer Andrew Macdonald (the trio would go on to make The Beach, A Life Less Ordinary and The Beach), he has created a wonderfully Hitchcockian stylish and suspenseful dark drama. Three wonderfully elitist yuppies (played by Kerry Fox, Ewan Macgregor and Christopher Eccleston) need a fourth to share their amazing flat. When their choice, the mysterious Hugo (Keith Allen) overdoses on his first night there, the trio find a suitcase stuffed with cash in his room and decides to dispose of the body, keeping the money for themselves. Then things get really interesting...

It's a clever, excellently cast film about jealousy, ego and manipulations. The three leads are pitch-perfect and Boyle's eye for visuals saturate the film in shart angles, rich textures and lighting.

Bad Education (Original Uncut NC-17 Edition)

Description

A gay friend and I both have pure and impure interest in Gael Garcia Bernal, so we went to see this together when it was first released. We got to the theatre late and the only place to sit was in those awful front rows that when I attempt to watch from I can feel my contacs slowly slide off my eyeballs. We weren't happy, to say the least, but we had no choice.

Then came the swimming pool scene. Suddenly we had the best and ONLY seats in the room!

It's not among Almodovar's critically acclaimed works but it bears his stamp in every way. Bad Education is a film noir, suspenseful, yet colour saturated and features Gael Garcia Bernal in a dual role.

Run Lola Run

Description

An unbelievably exhilerating ride! Short, tight and intense, Run Lola Run tells the story of Lola (Franke Potente) who must come up with a huge sum of money in 20 minutes to save her boyfriend, Manni. Three different storylines play out in incredibly heart-pounding, intensely visual drama.

Incredibly cool.

The Real Football Factories International - The Best Of

First to recommend

Description

Hosted by actor and footie fan Danny Dyer (from the fictional film The Football Factory), The Real Football Factories travel the world searching for the most hardcore football firms (supporter's clubs).

The crew travel to Turkey, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Netherlands, Poland and Russia to visit with the biggest and most passionate firms, experience the hooligan's history and attend games with them.

If you have any interest in soccer/football and football hooligans, you MUST watch this series.

Did you know that many believe that the war between Croatia and Serbia was sparked by a riot between Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) and Red Star Belgrade (Serbia)?

Green Street Hooligans

First to recommend

Description

I'm fascinated by soccer hooligan culture (see my recommendation for The Real Football Factory). This is one of the best fictional films made on the subject.

Set in London and centred around an American (Elijah Wood) who gets drawn into the world of the Green Street Elite - West Ham United's firm, by his sister's charismatic brother-in-law (Charlie Hunnan). The hooligan culture is fascinating with its levels of loyalty, comraderie, identity and passion and this film does a good job of capturing more than the media ever did at the height of the hooligan culture in the UK during the 80s and 90s.

The Machinist

4 people recommended this item

Description

Christian Bale got more press for the weight he lost for his role in The Machinist (and then bulked back up for Batman Begins) than the actual movie got. Which is a shame, because his performance is about much more than being able to see his ribcage.

It's the story of a troubled insomniac who is haunted by something mysterious. His world is one of a perpetual sleepwalker. You've had those days when you've had trouble sleeping or only had an hour or two and had to function as normally as possible, right? Imagine not sleeping for a year. The harrowing reality of living like that is only the first layer of psychological twisting that The Machinist delivers.

Marie Antoinette (2006)

9 people recommended this item

Description

This film was criticized as playing fast and loose with history and being vacuous to boot. It tells the story of arguably the most famous and infamous queen in history, French queen Marie Antoinette, whose husband was at the helm of a France dissolving into revolution.

Sofia Coppola has crafted a believable story around the teenager thrust into the pomp of overblown French society. And too little positive attention has been given to the attention paid to all the costumes, sets and style of the film. That's what sticks out most - and Coppola should not be criticized for "glossing over" the historical details. This is a film about Marie Antoinette, not Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution.

It's soundtracked to surprising effect with new wave - yet another thing Coppola's been criticised for - but it adds interest and allows for Marie Antoinette's story to have some modern relevance.

It's a candy-coloured fantastic film full of visual delights and Kirsten Dunst does a stellar job in the lead role.

If you love music, check out this movie about the 70's- 80's music scene in Manchester. The film is a docudrama of sorts that is told through the story of tv anchor/ personality turned record producer Tony Wilson who was front and center during the rise and tragic fall of Joy Division, The Sex Pistols, Happy Mondays and more. If you haven't seen this film, stop what you're doing immediately, find the closest Best Buy, purchase it, watch it and have your life transformed. I may sound over dramatic, but I really love this movie and I think you will too. The Criterion Collection features beaucoups of extras. So, get excited.
