Description
Well, color me excited. TV on the Radio has a new album out. I think I already knew that but forgot. Anybooze, I'm behind these guys 100% and love what they're doing. If you haven't given them a listen, check out their album Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. (via Amazon.com)

i hadn't really heard much of this band before the ep they did with iron and wine, but they're pretty great. folky tunes with some mexican horns, perfect for the end of summer.

mashup virtuoso greg gillis's newest album dropped yesterday, and it's predictably weird and outstanding (jay-z over radiohead's "paranoid android", for instance). they're following the radiohead/trent reznor "pay what you want" model, but with a twist--any donation gets you 320mp3, $5+ gets you flac format, and $10 gets you a physical copy when it comes out on cd.

Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III

Description
lil' wayne is, in fact, the best rapper alive--hell, he's probably top-5 all-time. lead single 'lollipop' is one of the more mainstream tracks on this sixteen-track opus, which takes plenty of lyrical and sonic left turns.

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Description
true, this album doesn't actually come out for a month, but most of the tracks have leaked/been played live already (edit: slash i got my dirty paws on a mastered leak). and they are outstanding. craig finn and co. keep wearing the neo-springsteen tag proudly, adding to their already-impressive catalog with tracks like "constructive summer", "lord, i'm discouraged", "stay positive" and "ask her for some adderall" (reportedly slated to become a vinyl b-side).
from the press release, written by finn: "A great American philosopher named D. Boon once said 'our band could be your life.' I think that is true. But 'your life could be our band' is also a true statement. I know this because we have lived it. These are our lives. These are your lives. This is our fourth record. Stay Positive."

more of the same from beach house. lucky for them, it's good--the synths are reigned in a bit this time around, but it's still warm and fuzzy. and they're from baltimore, so that's cool.

good stuff--sex, drugs and rock and roll. "more news from nowhere" is a great last track.

No Age - Nouns

Description
slightly more focused sophomore effort from l.a. rockcrit darlings no age--i guess it could technically be their debut, since weirdo rippers was a collection of eps. anyway, still fuzzy and lo-fi, and better live and loud than through headphones. not the best party music, though.

Man Man - Rabbit Habits

Description
i won't stop until everyone on the planet has heard at least one man man track. the third lp from this philly crew of coked-out crazies is a rare effort that keeps their weirdness and individuality intact, while making some of their most listenable tracks to date. fewer songs involving moustaches this time around--i think just one, actually.

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours

Description
don't worry about all the nu-rave/blog house blogo-noise surrounding this album--if you like electronic music, pick this one up. it owes a lot to trance and blog house, but this is a smart, fun album, made organic-sounding with live instrumentation and melancholy lyrics that play off the ecstatic (and e-fuelled) vibes of the music. comparisons to the avalanches' "since i left you" are a little off, since this album draws from a much narrower range of genres, but it's definitely worth it.
