Slash: The Slash autobiography
First to recommend
Description
A great set of stories, each one beter than the last. It is hard to beleive it's all true. A super entertaining read and a great insight into a time and a place that I personally find fascinating.
I think Anthony Bozza did a great job ghost writing this- it really feels honest, from the hip, and mostly as if it was all Slash's own words.

Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon by Daniel C. Dennett
First to recommend
Description
Dennett is probably my favorite non fiction author- I enjoy both his subjects and style.
This is his latest book. Not too much new here for old Dennett fans, but a good read full of the kind of stories and twists on old ideas that his regular readers like me have come to love.

Weird title, important message. This book was written by a professor of mine at The University of Victoria while I was doing my engineering undergrad. Dr. Scott worked through an early version of the book with my class and it had a profound effect on my career and my perspective on all things energy.
This is an entertaining book with a serious message. Recommended reading for everyone who wants to understand the problems we face and how we can solve them. This was written by someone who has understood the problem and has been thinking about solutions for far longer than almost anyone else in the field.

Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life by Daniel C. Dennett

Description
If I had to choose one book as the single greatest thing I have ever read, Darwin's Dangerous Idea would be it. I guess this seems a bit dramatic/hyperbolic, but I'm being sincere. Really- buy it now, read it several times.

My favorite philosophy book. Readable, exciting, and hard to put down- Dennet writes better than any dead Greek ever did.
The question of free will is probably the most common foray into philosophy that non-philoshpers make. This book for anyone who wants to know what one of todays best minds has to say on the subject.

Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
5 people recommended this item
Description
I'll echo the other recommenders here- Fooled by Randomness is superb- big ideas, a unique voice, and an original and important topic.
As an engineer who should be trained to understand the role of probability in the world, the most important insight of the book for me is the understanding that humans aren't just imperfect, we are flawed- the way our minds consider and recall probabilistic events evolved in a much different environment from the one we live in today. This result is a consistently flawed set of heuristics that people use to understand the complex world around them. Taleb isn't the first author to cover the idea of heuristics and cognitive biases, but he does a great job of showing how they play out in the world.
