FIT Museum

Description
Since Gothic fashion, concepts and lifestyles have been a fascination for those both attracted to and repulsed by its expression since the Dark Ages, I was surprised to learn that this FIT exhibit is the first devoted to "goth" fashion. The exhibit will include 75 different ensembles arranged in a setting carefully designed to enhance the dark and gloomy vibe. Kind of like a Fun House, only dressed in black. (via Harper's Bazaar)

Description
I have never really watched this movie. It's more of a participatory experience: throwing toast at the screen, reciting lines you know by heart right along with the actors, jumping up in front of the screen to do the "Time Warp." It may be the Greatest Show On Earth. And if you haven't been to the midnight showing with a group of friends, you haven't really seen it. Yet.

The music, the dancing, the drama . . . it's all here in the bold and brash form of beauty that was the 1980's. Capturing perfectly my own yearning to be a dancer, this movie is also my closet favorite. (Shhh, don't tell.)

My high school was just absolutely nothing like this movie (although we had our fair share of talented artists, musicians, singers, dancers and actors). Yet, that hasn't changed the fact that I remember every scene, every song and nearly every line as if it were my own life. Just call me wannabe.

Beijing National Stadium: The "Bird's Nest" by Herzong & DeMeuron (Swiss) and Li Xinggang
First to recommend
Description
The blueprint for this stadium was completed in 2003, but the "Nest" was not fully complete until weeks before the 2008 Olympic Games are scheduled to begin tomorrow, August 8, 2008. Now that it is complete, the stadium will act as an anchor for the games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. It is as rich in symbolism as it is large in size. The red glow, which is visible beginning at dusk, represents luck and optimism. And the structure itself is intended to project a sense of movement and energy. Good luck to all the athletes, along with their dedicated coaches !

Project Runway: Episode 4 - Rings of Glory
First to recommend
Description
I have been dazzled by the brilliance of the designers on Project Runway, who have been able to seemingly transform nearly anything (even trash !) into glorious and original fashion. Last night's episode was a little different. About half of the designers were confused or completely stumped when presented with the challenge of designing an outfit that would (hypothetically) be worn by the U.S. women athletes to wear as they process in during the Opening Ceremonies. It was hysterical and tragic all at the same time. Thankfully, guest judge, Apolo Anton Ohno, is quite the gentleman and gave kind, thoughtful reviews of each designer's work. I won't tell you who won, but here are some samples of what I saw.

Victoria and Albert Museum: Fashion Vs. Sport - On exhibit August 5, 2008 - January 4, 2009
First to recommend
Description
Coinciding almost exactly with the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games is the opening of an exhibit exploring the intersection of fashion and sport. The exhibit will be organized around 4 central themes: Dare, Display, Play and Desire. If you cannot make it to China to watch the athletes in action, perhaps you can make it to London for this vibrant showcase of sartorial prowess. If you are lucky, you will be able to fit both on your agenda.
