Flocks Aran Rug, Black - Design Within Reach

Description

How cool is this??

Exploring the relationship between familiar objects and extremes of scale, Rotterdam-based designer Christien Meindertsma has taken the classic hand-knit aran sweater and magnified it, creating something entirely new and unexpected: a floor covering. The Flocks Aran Rug is hand-knit from the wool of 18 merino sheep. Eschewing the ease that a simple knit and purl stitch would have offered, Meindertsma instead took her inspiration from aran sweaters, which are characterized by cabling and complex textures. Like her Flocks Pouf, the result is an arresting centerpiece, which adds an element of organic warmth to any room. This work of art can also be displayed as a wall hanging. Each rug comes with a Flocks tag, identifying the sheep whose wool was used to create the rug. (via dwr.com)

Taraxacum S2, White - Design Within Reach

First to recommend

Description

Inspired by George Nelson's experiments with metal frame lamp structures, the Castiglioni brothers designed their Taraxacum S2 (1960). To create the luminous structure, the brothers created a shape out of powder-coated steel that was sprayed with a "cocoon" of plastic polymers and protected with a clear finish. The coating acts as a diffuser, resulting in a lamp that delivers a warm, soft glow. Achille Castiglioni often referred to what he called the "principal design component," which could mean a new technology or even a new behavior. The next step was to build upon the component, and this was an area where the Castiglioni brothers truly excelled. Through rigorous examination of materials and production techniques, they created work like the Taraxacum S2. The word Taraxacum is the Latin name for the common dandelion. Twenty-eight years later, Achille used the name again with the introduction of his Taraxacum '88. Bulb included: One halogen 100W/120V/T10. Made in Italy.

I wish I could afford a rug like this, with its omnidirectional design approach. One would be able to appreciate it as a work of art from any angle. Of course then again, I probably wouldn't want my dog lying on it considering how much this thing goes for.

prettyrandomobjects :: squirrel vase - large

Description

I'm actually beginning to dislike squirrels, because they continue to raid my bird feeder. Not that I can blame them. Still --- for some odd reason these appeal to me. Go figure.

This listing is for the large squirrel vase, which stands about 7 3/4" in height. (via etsy.com)

Description

Another disturbing work from Susan Kniffin Davidson. I used to be an autopsy assistant at a children's hospital. At the autopsies, I was regularly asked to remove the brains. The sight of this work is a little reminiscent of that sight. Hmmm... Interesting cup. (via etsy.com)

Salt and Pepper Friends

Description

There are two types of best friends in the world; those that mirror each other and those that are polar opposites. Like Salt and Pepper. They are nothing alike, yet so complimentary it's difficult to think of one without the other. And here are the perfect vehicles for dispensing these inseparable friends; the only question being which is the happy face and which is the sad? It's sort of like a Rorsach test on your table - pop-psychology for dinner parties.

Suitable for salt & pepper, cocoa, or cinnamon.

White earthenware clay, hand glazed.
