I (rock) the 90s - a list by skyekat

About this list:
Being born in the 80s, I musically came of age in the 90s and have a soft spot for many albums from that time. These are the ones that still can stand on their feet, or that I have a particualr nostalgia for.

Primitive Radio Gods - Rocket - Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand

Description
There are certain songs that bring you right back to a particular time or place. This is one of those songs for me. There's a mellow sadness to the song, but it's not maudlin. A great song that stands the test of time well.

Deluxe: Better Than Ezra

Description
A great indie album. There was a lesser debut before this, but when Electra picked the album up, it became their major label debut. A good solid album of mid 90s indie rock.

Friction, Baby: Better Than Ezra

Description
Deluxe was a good indie rock record, but Friction, Baby is a great record. There are some great songs on here, from "King of New Orleans" to "Desperately Wanting", the big hit that pushed them into the minds of the mainstream. Great 90s album.

When The Pawn...: Fiona Apple

Description
I just need to note the full title of this album is:
When the Pawn Hits the Conflict He Thinks Like a King When He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, you hold your own hand and remember the depth is the greatest of heights and if you know where you stand, then you know where to land and if you fall it won't matter, cuz you'll know that you're right
which in and of itself makes this album awesome. Fiona Apple is crazy, but in the best way possible. "Fast As You Can" has to be one of my favorite songs to be crazy-insane to. Tidal was a great debut, but this album proves she's no one hit wonder.

So Much for the Afterglow: Everclear

Description
They weren't a "One Hit Wonder", but this album did prove to be their strongest. The songs are catchy and the guitars are really strong. "El Distorto De Melodica" could be as distorted and heavy as anything off of the Matrix soundtrack, while "I Will Buy You A New Life" was a great, modern rock, mainstream hit. A terrific 90 album.

Yourself or Someone Like You: Matchbox Twenty

Description
I have such fond memories of this album. We'd play it all the time, and there's such a range to the songs, musically. "3am" and "Push" were big alt rock hits at the time, but "Long Day", and "Girl Like That" share the same hooky guitars and infectious song structure. The rest of the album is great too though. "Busted" opens with a blistering riff and keeps going. "Hang" ends it on a more mellow note. The album swings between catchy guitar driven songs, and more angsty numbers.

Description
"Semi-Charmed Life" was such a great hit, and a impulsively catchy tune. The rest of the album is a slightly darker affair, but even with songs as aggressive as "Graduate", there's a hooky-ness to the tunes. It's definitely a raw and driven, guitar fueled affair, but a strong album overall.

Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos

Description
Great debut from one of the greatest singer/songwriters of this generation. "Silent All These Years" was the big single off this album, and how I first heard of her. It's amazing to me what a range she can get out of a piano. Songs run form popy to rockin and hit so many tones in between. Really a classic Tori album.

Bringing Down the Horse: The Wallflowers

Description
This is my favorite Wallflowers album. Early 90s rock with catchy songs and good hooks. Almost every song on here's really solid. There's only two songs on here I wouldn't recomend: "Josephine" and "I Wish I Felt Nothing". Other than that, the whole album's great. I hadn't heard this album in a while, but looking through my iTunes I saw it and threw it on, and it still sounds really fresh. Mid-tempo rockers mostly, but delivred with passion and good musicianship.

Sunburn: Fuel
First to recommend
Description
As far as catchy, angry songs go, Fuel is pretty good. They have a raw edge and that agressive vocal style, but some of the melodies are downright catchy. "Shimmer" is almost pretty before the hard stuff kicks in. The guitar work is solid, and the energy is good. Key tracks: "Bittersweet", "Shimmer", "Sunburn"
