Options for This Page
About this list:
Lolita fashion has been around since the 1970's and is gaining popularity abroad thanks in part to the growing popularity of anime/manga. This list provides a quick introduction to the brands, style and some sub-cultures for novices (like myself) as well as links to online shops that will ship overseas (and one US based jewelry designer) for established fans.

★★★BABY,THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT★★★ Jumper dress
First to recommend
Description
The jumper dress is a keystone of the Lolita style, which is all about looking like a young victorian girl. Key details include lace accents, bows and ruffles, as well as corset inspired bodices. This one, from couture label "Baby, the Star Shines Bright" comes in three colors: pink, which is the defining color of the "sweet lolita" look that hyper emphasizes the childish style by using whites and pastels only, a navy blue which would be suitable for a "classic lolita" and black and white in a more gothic lolita style. This brand is one of the few that will ship overseas: seek out their English page for more information.

Beth Ribbon Doll Coat (Cream)
First to recommend
Description
Lolita style is super kawaii ("cute")- frilly skirts and pinafores abound giving Lolitas the little girl look that earned them their name. Victorian inspired accents such as ruffles, ribbons and bows run counterpoint to skirt lengths and an overall energy that is anything but demure. Add black and punk/rock-n-roll edginess and you have the gothic loli style.

GOTHIC&LOLITA: New~Alice in wonderland sweet lolita shoes
First to recommend
Description
Vivienne Westwood's designs have had a huge impact on gothic & lolita style in Japan. Her rocking horse ballet shoes (designed by Patrick Cox) dumped Naomi Campbell on her butt in 1994 and have since spawned scads of knock-offs and re-interpretations like this adorable Alice in Wonderland version. Bona fide Westwood versions can be found through auction sites, but their high fashion cache in Japan often pushes prices into the $600-$800 range.

Moi-même-Moitié was founded in 1999 by Malice Mizer, lead singer of the (now-disbanded_ Japanese goth band Mana. This line is *the* couture brand in Gothic Lolita style, and has played a tremendous role in defining it. He is responsible for creating the substyles known as Elegant Gothic Lolita (EGL) and Elegant Gothic Aritistocrat (after his women's and androgynous lines, respectively). EGL style uses only black, white and dark colors with liberal use of lace, bows, ruffles and high-quality fabrics.
