Sierra Designs Papagayo Tent

First to recommend

Description

This is a larger version of the Sierra Meteor Light tent that I currently use. It claims it will hold 4 people comfortably, but let's assume 3 people and some stuff will fit in there okay. This tent looks big enough and sturdy enough to survive everything from the dust storms on the playa at Burning Man to the nor'easterly gusts in Edmond Col in the Presidential Range.

REI Base Camp 4 Tent

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Whether you are setting up camp for 1 or for 2, the four-person tent is the way to go because you are required to bring all your needs with you, including water to drink and to bath. The four-person leaves enough space for storing a day's worth of needs, with the remainder stored in your car. (Park close to tent set-up.) If you are going by RV, I would still bring a tent, though it doesn't have to be this nice. You want to store your outfits (costumes) in the tent, leaving room in the RV for guests. Trust me, they'll come, especially if you have the air-conditioning running.

For $339, this is not the cheapest tent out there, but it is one of the better ones. I own this, and it works great. What to look for:

- Sealed seams. It does not rain at the playa, but you will get sand storms, which will enter your tent no matter how sealed you try to make it.
- Lots of ventilation. It gets HOT. This tent has four side ventilation AND roof ventilation.
- Storage. Not a necessecity, but great to have. This tent has a mesh attic and lots of mesh pockets for storing important things, such as headlamps, goggles, etc.
- Strength. During a wind storm, I've seen tents fly. So make sure yours is sturdy.
- Space. It is not uncommon to change outfits 3 times a day, so might as well give yourself some room for doing so.

Petzl Zipka Plus LED Headlamp

First to recommend

Description

This might be the most important item to bring to Burning Man after a tent and lots of water. It might even be more important than your tent as it allows you to set up your tent in the dark if you get there in the middle of the night,. Being able to perform tasks without using one of your two hands to hold a flashlight is a jo. This particular light has a thin zip line instead of a strap to hold it on your head, so it takes up so little room you can keep it in your pocket when you're not using it. One caveat, it you have long hair the zip line might snag it.

Coleman Exponent Feather 442 Dual Fuel Backpacking Stove

First to recommend

Description

I've used a version of this stove for about 15 years, although to this date I haven't needed to use the unleaded fuel option - thankfully. I've managed to get my food cooked from 0-11,000 feet, and even out on the windy playa. It's reasonably small and light, and you don't have to use disposable fuel canisters which create waste. I like how it gets lighter as a backpacking trip progresses.

Travel Chair Big Bubba Chair with Footrest

First to recommend

Description

I've always regretted buying a chair without a footrest. If I had it to do again this is the chair I would buy. There'd be no more dragging the cooler up in front of my chair to rest my feet on. With this chair I could drag that cooler up next to my chair and be able to grab a beer without lifting my feet. Oh yeah.

EL Wire (80 Inch EL Wire)

3 people recommended this item

Description

El Wire is definitely the way to go for Burning Man. You can dec-out your entire bike like a neon spaceship, which will ensure you will be seen by the thousands of bicycles roaming around the playa at night. I've seen some amazing art cars completely outlined in these wires, and they look amazing.

Banana Boat Sport Ultra Mist SPF 50 Sunblock - 6 oz.

First to recommend

Description

I recently became a fan of these spray on sunscreen products. The coverage you get is unbeatable, no trusting you friend to get every spot, and if a friend is not around then anyone can spray you and you won't have to deal with any roving fingers. I'm not sure this stuff is as environmentally friendly as I would like, some of it just blows away in the wind, but I'm still impressed with the performance.

Canon Powershot SD850 IS Digital ELPH Camera

First to recommend

Description

I have the SD800 IS and this is an improved version. My SD800 IS has a slightly wider angle lens which is good for taking landscapes, but it isn't really known for it's sharpness. This camera goes back to a standard focal length range with 4x optical zoom. If you're going to buy one of these tiny pocket cameras, image stabilization is key, and that's what the IS stands for

Bungie Balls

Description

Bungie balls are an essential part for building a shade structure. They hold the tarp to the frame. 100 of them for $35 seems like a pretty good deal to me!
