Shipwrecked: The Essential List - a list by tatorandtots

About this list:

As the temperature begins its annual plunge, I find myself thinking of warm beaches and cabana boys named Seamus (hey, you can have your Juans and Pierres.... Irish boys always make the best cabana boys. They take the refilling of drinks quite seriously.) But being a Murphy, my luck is the plane would fly past Mr. Rourke and crash into a deserted island. Here's what I hope I would have. But won't, of course.

Qualifications:

Often stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Scallywag Sloop Tree House

Description

Wow, Sam's Club is not just for 240-count boxes of Tampax and cheap tires anymore. For about a fifth of what the GOP has spent (so far) on Sarah Palin's wardrobe, you can take home this quite excellent shipwreck-themed playhouse. I wonder if you can see Russia from it.....

Regardless, if I ever find myself needing beach shelter, this would definitely be on my "Oh yes, please!" list. Simply because the notion of spending over 25K to buy something made to look like scraps and debris is entertaining. It's like a trailer park house for pirates. Love it.

Should you ever find yourself alone on a beach with plenty of time on your hands, among other things, you can just put this bad boy in the sun for 5 hours and then bada bing, bada boom. 2.5 hours of fun.

Energy-Harvesting Dance Floor

Description

When my plane goes down and Tattoo is nowhere to be found with my margarita, it'll be up to me to create the party, I suppose. This eco-friendly dance floor would really help. It basically harvests the power of movement via dance to generate electricity, thus powering itself. Now if I can just find a solar-powered disco ball.....

Ravi Portable Solar Generator

Description

So on my desert island I can still use my iPod? Oh thank God.

from The Design Blog:
"Ravi, which is another name in the Hindu religion for the life-giving Sun God, is a portable solar generator that will fulfill your small energy requirements and le you live a sustainable life. All you have to do is place the portable solar generator outdoors, either in the garden or terrace, during daytime. Taking a cue from nature, Ravi (while unwrapped) looks like a flower with solar panels inside the petals. The solar panels harness enough power to charge all your portable electronic gadgets of daily use."

Description

I'm a fan of making the most of a situation when possible. At least in terms of decor.

So if I find myself stranded on a desert island, I want to go gung-ho with the theme. This artist's sculptures are great inspiration- I just need to collect all of the cans and bottles that wash up on shore and voila! Beach art that exudes a cannibalistic aura.... It says, "Hi. I will eat you."

Description

One of man's first big accomplishments was figuring out how to make fire. Then he had to figure out how to put it out before burning the whole damn place down.

Here's a stylish way to keep some control.

from the Design Blog:
Sporting a simple, fuss-free form, the X Sting Wish couldn’t have got more user-friendly. Just like a gun, aim and pull the trigger. Tweaked with many firing dousing options like CO², water and powder, it also features in-built LEDs that can help to illuminate your way to the problem area.
