Final Cut Express 4.0

First to recommend

Description

Hate to break ti to you, but, if you're even moderately serious about making a film, you're going to have to have video editing software. Should you splurge for Final Cut Pro? Probably not. Should you just try to make it happen with iMovie? Probably not. This is why we have Final Cut Express. It's everything you'd ever want/need as a begging, intermediate filmmaker and it's only $200.

Color Gel Pack - 7 Assorted 10"

First to recommend

Description

No, it's not the most important thing you'll invest in to make your film as good as possible. However, buying a few gels (mainly yellow, blue and red), can drastically improve the look and feel of your film. This 7 pack is $40 and might be a bit of over kill for a beginner. Maybe, buy two of each of the main colors instead?

Rode NTG-2 Shotgun Mic w/ Location Sound Package

First to recommend

Description

Many would argue that the quickest way to make a film look amateur is to put out something with bad sound quality. So if you do nothing else, besides point and shoot, getting a professional mic would be that extra add on you should do. This Shotgun mic, with kit should be perfect for your indie film needs.

Finally, of course, you're gonna need the tapes to record your potentially really awesome movie. At about $8 a piece, these should do the job just fine.

Film Music

First to recommend

Description

If you're looking to make a movie for a few thousand dollars, odds are that you don't have the money to license the songs you originally dreamt about. If you plan on entering the film into festivals or, really, doing anything serious with it, you can't use music without permission and that usually means without buying it. However, Moby has made available tons of songs for free use by people like you and me. Enjoy.
