Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly

Description
Chef Bourdain writes about food and cooking as it were sex: passionate but rough and nasty.

Down and Out in Paris and London
2 people recommended this item
Description
orwell's semi-autobiographical account of poverty in paris and london had a sixty-year jump on anthony bourdain's percussive 'kitchen confidential.' plus, as far as i know, tony never had to pawn his clothes.
to a modern ear, orwell's prose feels somewhat stilted, but it's worth a read.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

Description
you probably had to read for whom the bell tolls or the old man and the sea at some point in high school, and you might have hated it. but you're only cheating yourself if you don't read hemingway's first novel. semi-autobiographical, as many of hemingway's works were, the story follows a group of american and british expats (part of gertrude stein's "lost generation") around france and spain.
i won't lie, though; this cover (i also have this edition) is TERRIBLE.

Lester Bangs - Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung: The Work of a Legendary Critic

Description
a big old mouthful of a title, that one. it's too long for the title field, so here's the full version: "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung: The Work of a Legendary Critic: Rock'N'Roll as Literature and Literature as Rock 'N'Roll." some of bangs' work (neither his zenith nor nadir are entirely represented), compiled by greil marcus. the collection does, however, does grab some gems, and anyone interested in new journalism should take a look, if for no other reason than his entertaining bull sessions with lou reed and saxophone assault on his aged landlady. good stuff.
on a personal note, this book got me turned onto the troggs (of "wild thing" fame).

an excellent primer on the history of hip-hop. maybe a little heavy on the east coast at the expense of other regions, but it's hard to fault that choice.

peter carey (true history of the kelly gang)'s newest novel. gorgeous narration and relationship between the two brothers. i've heard it called "art noir," which seems pretty close.
should be required reading for anyone trying to write multiple narrators.
