Sonic Alert SB300 Sonic Boom Loud Vibrating Alarm Clock with Large Display

First to recommend

Description

I'm deaf in one ear and an extremely deep sleeper. Lying with my good ear against the pillow, I've slept through fire alarms, medical emergencies, incessant phone calls, etc. After I slept straight through a midterm exam despite setting four different alarms in my room, I started losing sleep at night because there seemed to be no way to predict when I'd wake up the next morning.

The Sonic Boom alarm clock has been a blessing on my nightstand for four years. Since then, as long as I've set this alarm, which uses A/C power and has easy-to-press buttons for setting the time and alarm, a snooze button, and a vibrating disk that slips under my pillow, I've never overslept again. Other features include an alarm tone that can be adjustable in volume and pitch, depending on hearing needs, and a flashing display, but I don't bother with either. The minor earthquake under my pillow is all I need.

It's not very cute and it doesn't come in purple, but it lets me rest easy.

Ecover Ecological Stain Remover

First to recommend

Description

I discovered the Ecover line as a student studying abroad in New Zealand. Their Ecological Stain Remover became my weapon of choice against mud, grass, lentil, tree sap, and even blood stains on my clothes and gear after every tramp through the NZ bush. I brought a bottle back to the U.S. with me and rationed it on my most beloved items (safe on cotton and most synthetics; I've used it on some wool, but not before spot-testing) and for the most ominous stains.

This is indeed a stain remover—not just a pre-treatment against setting stains. Spots vanish beneath the fluffy suds, and yet it's so gentle that I can go ahead and rewear an item before putting it through the wash to rinse away that patch of hardened residue left by some sprays and gels. It truly works wonders.

Ceramic Plastic Cup

First to recommend

Description

Just because plastic bathroom cups are wasteful and damaging the environment, I resent having to give up the nostalgia of those ridges in the middle and the familiar lip around the rim. They remind me of the my-side-of-the-sink battles I used to have with my little brother. In my family, we reused our cups for about a week at a time and then throw them away. My brother NEVER brought a fresh cup for me back from the hall closet when he got one for himself. NEVER. Ah, yes, nostalgia. Luckily, I don't have to let those bathwater-colored memories die. The ceramic plastic cup is a perfect replica of the original. It's also an upgrade: it can hold hot or cold water and a toothbrush and toothpaste tube. Hand wash it instead of throwing it away.

Magnolia Jewelry Tree

6 people recommended this item

Description

My distaste for birds is notorious, but I love trees and branches and this piece compliments nature and design so well. The shape captures the grace of nature and the silver color adds a delicate sophistication. This jewelry stand is all about display; you could arrange specific items to achieve a particular look beyond its basic function. It also keeps special items and ones that I wear every day close at hand and prevents the tangles of a jewelry box. I wind chains several times around the branches and let pendants drop down, rather than draping necklaces over the branches. Otherwise, most of my necklaces are so long that they dangle to the "ground" and get tangled anyway. It always makes me imagine a real tree with baubles caught in its branches instead of leaves. There are a couple of shorter "stumps" that are good for holding rings or perhaps hoop earrings, though I haven't had much luck hanging most earrings here.

6-in-1 Flower Hammer

First to recommend

Description

The floral silk screen print might make you smile, but this is not a novelty tool. This hammer is tough, made of heavy-duty steel. You can feel the density and heft when you use it. Hidden inside the handle are three flat-heard screwdrivers and one Phillips head screwdriver. The tip of the hammer's handle screws off to open a secret compartment where these hide away for safe keeping and convenience. A fun, thoughtful, and useful gift for a lady moving into her first dorm or home. A 6-in-1 screwdriver and a utility knife are available in similar designs.
