Spearmint

First to recommend

Description

The best and strongest culinary mint out there. Unless you want this plant to take over your entire yard, plant it in a container. It will literally grow like a weed. Mint is reputed to keep ants away - don't believe it. Unless you crush the leaves of any plant, it will most likely not deter pests.

Anyway, the leaves of this plant make excellent drink accents, decorative food accents, beverage flavorings (mojitos, mint julips and teas), and mint sauces for meat dishes.

If you decide to grow your mint in containers, you can let it freeze over and it will come back in the Spring. I guess it goes without saying that the same will happen in your yard. This winter I decided to bring my combo pot of spearmint and pineapple mint indoors. We will see how it handles the grow lights and artificial heat. (via herbs.com)

Chateau Set of 3 Botanical Jars

First to recommend

Description

I do quite a bit of indoor gardening. This would that notion to the extreme, plus decor. These hand blown glass jars do not include the plants that are shown in the photo. You have to add water and float gardenias to create the same effect. Then you will in essence have living art. (via burkedecor.com)

Desktop Carnivorous Plant Set

Description

I have always loved the idea of carnivorous plants. A plant that you can watch eat! Eco-friendly pest control! I have had the idea too, that they were relatively difficult to raise. This little kit makes me want to try my hand at it. I mean, how hard could it be? (via thinkgeek.com)

(Plectranthus amboinicus) Spanish Thyme, Cuban Oregano

First to recommend

Description

I have this little gem growing in my indoor greenhouse right now in the middle of the Fall. I was first introduced to it several years ago at a succulents show here in town. However, the specimen I obtained at that show perished from neglect at an ex-roomate's house last year. I was pleased to find it available on the Richter's Herbs website a few months ago.

The Cuban Oregano plant is an unusual, fleshy-leafed plant that is used as a culinary seasoning in the Caribbean. I've read that it should not be used in culinary endeavors, but had actually tried it with some success before hearing that, so to each his or her own. This plant seems undeterred by sun and heat but should be watered regularly. Just not overwatered. Growth in the Spring and Summer is moderate, but supposedly in the Fall is not remarkable. I have not found this to be the case. However, I do have the plant in a PVC wrapped greenhouse. The plant does not do well in the cold. This plant also emits a very strong fragrance when handled. AeroGarden 3 Black w/ Gourmet Herb Kit

First to recommend

Description

I have been fiending over various types and incarnations of the Aerogarden ever since I first saw it at 2 AM on an infomercial. Now it's available retail and online at many garden supply and other stores. I don't really have the counter space for it, but had I the spare change I would try and make space for this modern marvel.

This incarnation is to grow a bevy of gourmet herbs. It's available in black or white. Alternative seed kits are available for this design.

* Built-In Automated Grow Lights - an energy-efficient bulb grows lush, healthy plants in the home at any time of year
* Aeroponic Growing System - advanced technology provides a near-perfect growing environment for big, healthy plants that produce huge harvests
* Computerized "Smart" Garden Technology - automatically turns lights on and off to stimulate sunlight, and lets you know when to add nutrients
* Replace Bulbs Reminder System

Since I don't really buy too many gadgets, I end up growing my herbs the old-fashioned way. Alas, I envy anyone with the extra cash and counter space... (via parkseed.com)

Money Tree Plant - Plants at 1-800

First to recommend

Description

I just received one of these compact trees as a gift. My mother and I were lucky enough to stumble across several specimins for under $15 at a local grocery store.

These plants are significant to followers of Feng Shui. The five leaves symbolize the five elements in feng shui: wood, fire, water, earth and metal. Some say that if the plant is kept where money is kept (or where money is needed), that wealth and prosperity will follow. The plant is referred to as "Bringer of Good Fortune" in Asian cultures, especially if given as a gift.

The braided money tree plant, known as Pachira aquatica, is one of the easiest houseplants to take care of. It grows well in low light conditions. Although, on the instructions for the specimen I was given, it says to give it plenty of sun and water once weekly. On the 1-800-FLOWERS.COM website, the care instructions are to let the plant's soil dry out before watering. I would go by the instructions given with your individual specimen. But if this plant can survive in a grocery store setting and is routinely given as a corporate desk gift, I would surmise that it is fairly adaptable and resilient.

When you receive your money tree, it will typically be 4-5 years old (1-2 feet in height). If properly cared for and repotted every few years, it is said that these trees can reach up to 7 feet in height. (via ww22.1800flowers.com)

Worm Farm fromSeeds of Change

First to recommend

Description

A fairly affordable way to fertilize your garden and houseplants. The Worm Farm from Seeds of Change provides ample worm castings for your soil. Ever wonder why earthworms are good for your soil? It's the castings that the worms leave behind. I know, sounds lovely, but it's an awesome organic way to improve the fertility of your soil.

Worms turn organic matter into nutritious castings for your garden or potting mixes. Seed of Change's Worm Farm has a four-tray system that makes the entire process simple. You place your worm colony into the bottom try with bedding and food scraps. As the worms finish digesting, they migrate into the upper trays leaving behind nutrient-rich castings.
