About this list:
It may seem kind of early to begin thinking about it, but looking around the bleak Winter landscape --- I already am.

A "blooming" nut!
Hori Hori Knives - Lee Valley Tools
First to recommend
Description
This favorite of many professionals does five jobs well. Use it instead of a trowel for digging, planting bulbs, and weeding. The saw blade cuts roots and divides small perennials. The pointed end is a crevice tool.
Traditionally used in Japan to collect specimens for bonsai (hori means "digging"), the knife has a heavy steel blade that is dished, with a serrated edge on one side and a sharpened edge on the other.
Hardwood handle. Available with either a carbon-steel blade or a rust-resistant stainless-steel blade. The stainless knife has graduations and an extra-sharp blade. Each comes with a belt sheath and is approximately 12" overall.

A Gardener's Journal – A Ten Year Chronicle of Your Garden - Lee Valley Tools
First to recommend
Description
This is a smart and practical idea in a gardening journal. 'A Gardener's Journal' is setup as a ten-year perpetual journal, which can be started at any time. As far as I'm concerned, this is an interactive gardening tool. (via leevalley.com)

Description
Don't let the the price fool you. These are not feeble plastic tools. They are made of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene, they are lightweight, strong and non-rusting. They are great for kids to get their "wings" in the garden, and great as indoor gardening tools for adults.
The set of six includes a wide trowel, four-prong cultivator, two-prong cultivator, narrow trowel, weeding fork, and weeder.

Folding Catch Tray - Lee Valley Tools

Description
The great advantage of this tray is that it can be rolled up (or folded) and tucked away when not needed. In use, it provides a 24" × 28" work surface, with inflatable 2" high edges to contain water and soil.
Made from heavy-duty waterproof vinyl, it makes a perfect potting tray (especially for those short on storage space), with ample room to fill pots without spilling on the floor. Alternatively, it is also an excellent catch tray to contain water spillage, or to protect the trunk of a car when transporting plants.

Park Seed: Rose Double Knock Out - A red hybrid Tea Rose with double blooms
First to recommend
Description
If they don't run out, I plan to border portions of my house with this hardy rose variety. The blooms are fire-engine red and 2 1/2 inches wide. They bloom practically non-stop from early summer until frost. Most are double or semi-double and have a petal count from 18 to 25.
It works fine as a low hedge in sunny to partly sunny areas of the garden. When is ideal for me with my mixed-sun location.
The other reason I'm interested in this rose is its proported resistance to blackspot. Which is a particular problem disease when growing roses.
Other highlights of this 3 x 3 foot shrub are that it is crown-hardy to 20 degrees F, drought, heat, and humidity-resistant. In addition to being resistant against blackspot, it's also resistant to such pests as the Japanese beetle, leafhopper and rose midge. (via parkseed.com)

Tiered Vase - Lee Valley Tools
First to recommend
Description
Excellent for flower arranging or rooting, this vase is made up of seven minature vases in three tiers. I think it's a small thing of beauty. Even though these days, fresh flowers seem to be a frivolity (unless you grow them yourself), this vase screams to be filled. Although, it's pretty cool all on its own.
Each vase is 2 3/4 inches tall with a 1-1/8" diagonal opening, 6" tall overall. Perfect for small stemmed flowers that can be tricky to arrange.
Made in the USA.

SumiSoil - Lee Valley Tools
First to recommend
Description
Sumi (the Japanese word for charcoal) is the core material in these ceramic-coated, peppercorn-sized beads. Designed to be used as a soil amendment or a soil alternative, the beads have several benefits. First, each bead absorbs up to 70% of its volume in water, slowly releasing water when the soil begins to dry, extending the period between waterings. Second, they improve root aeration, used alone as a growing medium or in a potting mix. Third, seedlings grown in the beads are removed easily, avoiding damage to the root system and transplant shock. Finally, because the charcoal is activated, the beads help absorb odor.
Each 1kg (35 oz) package fills about four 4" diameter pots, or can be mixed in a ratio of one part SumiSoil to 10 parts potting medium (increase the amount of SumiSoil for plants requiring greater hydration). Suitable for both indoor and outdoor plants.
Made in Japan.
