Wood Childrens SandBox - 4'x4'

First to recommend

Description

A sandbox can provide hours of sensory fun in the great outdoors. Kids can dig for dinosaur bones, create castles, or have a party for Malibu Barbie.

This sandbox is affordable (even with shipping) and isn't made of obnoxious brightly colored plastic. Just fill with play sand (found at most home improvement centers) and you're on your way.

Kids' Binoculars

First to recommend

Description

Binoculars are fun when you're a kid. They're the perfect accessory for spy or pirate play but, are perfect for older kids keeping watch over their club or treehouse. These kids' binoculars are priced and made for play but, also feature 6x magnification (35 mm lens) so your little ones can observe animals and birds in the wild without getting too close.

HearthSong Firefly Lantern

First to recommend

Description

I am a big fan of the Coleman Kids Firefly lantern but, this is a nice smaller wood version. The Firefly Lantern is an absolute must for little outdoor explorers. Our own has been home-for-a-day to a lanky praying mantis, a monarch butterfly, and a nasty stinkbug. The lantern lives up to its name every July when the fireflies blink in the field. We fill the lantern and observe our glowing friends for a while. Then, remove the lid and let them depart when they're ready.

Wild Bird Identification Guide: Pocket Backyard Bird Guide

First to recommend

Description

I bought this guide several years ago and keep it in a basket by the window with small binoculars. An affordable, easy way to introduce children to the animals that live in their part of the world. You can add other guides to bugs, trees, and plants as they grow.

Child's Wood Bird Call

First to recommend

Description

Birdwatching, city or forest, is an opportunity to encourage patience and improve observation skills for little ones. Need to attract a bird or two? Well, this handy little wooden bird whistle is designed just for the smaller set. Partner this call with a laminated bird identification chart for your region and a pair of binoculars and you've got a budding scientist. If they really enjoy birdwatching, help them report their observations to the Lab of Orinthology at Cornell University: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/netcommunity/Page.aspx?pid=708

Rope Ladder

Description

If you're thinking about adding a swing to the mighty oak, why not add a ladder too? After all, pirates have to scan the seas and monkeys need to climb the trees.

FAIRY HOUSES ... EVERYWHERE! by Barry & Tracy Kane

First to recommend

Description

Entertaining enough as a picture book (for boys or girls), but your child's view of the outdoors might never be the same. Pinecones, twigs, and acorn tops are transformed into charming cottages and retreats for wee folk and captured in beautiful photographs.

Enchanted Garden Door

First to recommend

Description

In early 2008, we awoke on a spring morning and found a small visitor had taken up residence in our hackberry tree. The appearance of the little door and stone pathway brought curious children to the garden all summer long. We found seashells filled with berries at the doorstep, acorns and even wee flowers. This little wooden door brings a whole lot of magic... if you believe!
