Art of the Slow Cooker
First to recommend
Description
@MissKellyOT gave this to me as a birthday gift, and I've already learned quite a bit from it (e.g. the author usually recommends browning meat before transferring it to the #slow cookers to get a more flavorful final product). The book is full of great photographs, and has sections on #soup, #stews, and even #desserts I'm looking forward to trying some of the 80 recipes inside.

Gadget Nation

Description
If ThisNext were a book, it would be Gadget Nation. Many of the wacky fun products people put on ThisNext (Clocky, Octodog, cupcake cases, etc.) are featured in this book, along with some that probably haven't made it onto ThisNext yet.
A great guide to some strange and wonderful inventions - makes a great gift or coffee table book.

Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture by Martin Fowler
First to recommend
Description
I'm a practical software developer who usually focuses on rapid development, so a book with a title like this normally puts me off. However, I've been thumbing through a copy at the local bookstore and am really impressed with the practical advice it offers to application developers.
It's not specific to the web or database backed applications, but most of the patterns covered are directly applicable, and will help web app developers think through possible solutions.

JavaScript: The Good Parts, by Douglas Crockford
First to recommend
Description
This short book explains Javascript well, and treats it as a serious programming language instead of just a toy to move things around a web page. Javascript has significant differences from more traditional OO languages, but it can be used to write great software.
Now that web browsers (esp. Firefox 3 and Google Chrome) are able to run javascript much more quickly than before, books like this are important to help developers understand how to create more fully feature web applications.

Secretly, I am a data whore and love geeking out with numbers. I just try not to admit to it. It's hard enough that I'm Asian! I can't wait to read this book to find out how the quantitative geek shall inherit the Earth :)

I Am America (And So Can You!) AudioBook

Description
Just listened to this "shouted by the author" audiobook on a road trip, and we laughed so hard we had to pause it at some points. Stephen Colbert is fantastic as a sort of "Bill O'Reilly on crack" talk show host/pundit, and this is some of his best work.

H.G. Wells: The Outline of History
First to recommend
Description
H.G. Wells is best known for his science fiction (e.g The Time Machine, War of the Worlds), but he also wrote a comprehensive history of the world around the time of WWI. I read this a few years ago and was really impressed with how he explains history in terms of themes (e.g nomads/settled peoples, priests/secular kings).
Even if you don't want to take the time to read the whole thing, this is a great reference for getting overviews of different periods of history. Although this book was hugely popular for many years, I believe it's out of print now, so you'll want to try an Amazon seller or maybe a local used bookstore. I got my copy at Powell's in Portland, which had a good selection when I was there.
