Samsung HL61A750 61-Inch 1080p LED Powered DLP HDTV

First to recommend

Description

I recently purchased this set and so far I've very pleased with it. Here's the thinking that went into this purchase:

Plasma: pro - bright picture, cheaper than LCD, con - burn in, high power consumption.

The burn in risk ruins plasma for me. With video games, use as a computer, and crawls/other features TV, I don't want to buy something that's going to degrade.

LCD: pro -bright wide picture, con - expensive

We were very close to getting a 52" Toshiba LCD, which would have been a fine choice. If you're going to sit 6-7 feet from your set and/or the extra $500+ you'll pay doesn't faze you, go with an LCD from Sony, Samsung or Toshiba.

DLP: pro - cheaper, larger sizes available, con - viewing angle, slightly thicker

For us, it really came down to price and the DLP features being sufficient. This set is available for well under $2000, and (if you can find it), there's a 56" version that should be under $1500. The usual arguments against DLP are

1. The lamp is $300 and needs to be replaced every few years. This is no longer an issue with LED based DLPs like this one.

2. Rainbow effect. I don't notice it, and it's supposed to be greatly reduced in this generation.

3. Viewing angle/brightness. Still an issue, but we're not throwing a bunch of super bowl parties, so it's not an issue for us.

4. Thickness. You can't mount this to a wall, but I don't care about that. This set is ~18 inches thick and about 70 lbs. It's bulky, but not heavy.

If you do pick a DLP, Samsung is the brand to go with. This model is also available in 56" and 67" models. If all the prices are doable, make your choice based on how far away you'll be sitting. For 8-9 feet, the 61" model is perfect, but it'll be overwhelming if you're 6-7 feet away.

After 2 months, I haven't had any problems with this set. With the money I saved by not buying a smaller LCD, I can afford to get a nice Blu-Ray player or a small computer to attach.

Jabra BT620s Bluetooth Stereo Headset

Description

Bluetooth headphones are now well established and fairly inexpensive, so even non-early adopters can ditch the wires that tether them to their computer or other sound source.

I don't own a pair of wireless headphones yet, but I'm planning on getting some once I've got a home theater PC. Late night gaming/coding/browsing from the comfort of the couch sounds like fun.

Sony VAIO Living Room PC with Blu Ray Drive (white)

First to recommend

Description

I just purchased a big screen TV for the first time (Samsung 61" DLP, review coming soon) and I'm doing research on computers to connect to it. Initially, I was leaning towards the mac mini (I like its design, small size and the Front Row software we've enjoyed on our iMac), but I'd really like something with a Blu-Ray drive and larger capacities for hard drives and RAM.

This new "Living Room" computer from Sony seems to have all the specs I'd like, and a nice design as well. It's larger than the mini, but would look nice on the TV stand, comes in white or black (tough choice), and Sony claims the design is really quiet - you don't want a contantly humming computer fan disturbing your movie watching.

Specs from Amazon:

- Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 Processor
- 2-4 GB RAM
- 500 GB Hard Drive
- Blu Ray Drive
- Wi-Fi
- ATSC/NTSC tuners for recording TV
- Vista Premum w/media center capabilities
- HDMI output

Kudos to Sony for making such an advanced machine at an almost reasonable price. I'm hoping Apple will answer with a beefed up mini, but they had better do that soon if they'd like my business.

Jet Powered Wing

Description

This isn't something you'll be able to buy at Wal-Mart anytime soon, but it's the closest humans have ever come to jetpacks or Ironman style suits.

Swiss pilot Yves Rossy tested his jet powered wing recently, in a 5 minute flight over the alps that included climbing 2600 feet and doing some amazing acrobatics. Rossy plans on crossing the english channel with the wing later this year.

Aspen Bidet with Butt Dryer

First to recommend

Description

After seeing that our mens room had once again run out of toilet paper, I was thinking if it should be possible to use the restroom without needing any paper at all. Sure enough, there now exist toilets with bidets that have built in dryers.

As the site says, the butt dryer "dries the dampened parts using warm air".

Think of all the trees you can help save. If using hand dryers is the environmentally responsible thing to, how can you not also support switching to devices like this?

Everex TC2502 Green gPC w/ Via C7-D Processor

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Computer prices have been dropping for years, but it's still nicely shocking that you can buy a new computer for around $200! The Everex green PC runs linux (gOS is a version of Ubuntu) and comes with 512MB RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a CD/RW+DVD-ROM combo drive.

While it's certainly not as powerful as machines you can get for $500 or more, this is still a great choice for people on a budget, as a backup computer, or as an easy way to check out linux without risking messing up your current computer. (via Matt Cutts)

Electronic Bubble Wrap Keychain

Description

One of the single greatest gifts (and curses) to anyone who is a little anal retentive is bubble wrap. Sure it's good for protecting packages, but the real joy is popping each and every bubble. You can't let even one survive or your mission as bubble popper has failed. But what happens when you desire the joy of popping bubble wrap but don't have the time to invest in popping a full 60' roll? Welcome to the future, my friends; electronic bubble wrap is here.
