A Town Like Alice (1981) TV Series

Description
I recommended the 1956 movie adaptation of Nevil Shute's novel; now I recommend the 1981 TV series that was broadcast on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre. It features the hunky Bryan Brown as John Harman and Helen Morse.

I love a good romance. This is the story about a couple that overcame incredible odds. Jean Paget is one of a group of Englishwomen on a forced march through Malaysia in WWII. Joe Harman is a Australian POW held by the Japanese. They meet by chance while she is on the march. Later, he steals chickens to feed the women and is tortured by crucifixion for rushing a Japanese soldier.
I loved the 1982 TV series. I saw this 1956 movie on TCM recently, for the first time. I won't say which is better; I liked them both.

sex, lies, and videotape

Description
Graham (James Spader) seeks out his college friend John (Peter Gallagher, now of the OC). Graham videotapes women's sexual confessions, as he cannot connect with women directly. Ann (Andie MacDowell) is John's repressed wife.
Two parts stands out in particular:
Once Ann confirms that John is cheating on her, she changes out of the floaty white dress that she had been wearing into more form-fitting black clothing. To me, the change of dress represents Ann's transformation from repressed wife to assertive woman.
The denouement of the film juxtaposes two frames of time: the videotaping itself and John's watching the videotape post-fact.

2003 was the year of the documentary, Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth notwithstanding. There was My Architect: A Son's Journey and Osama's favorite, Fahrenheit 911 and this - Robert McNamara candidly talks about his experiences in WWII and as Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War.

The life and career of Louis I. Kahn, one of the 20th century's most influential architects, as documented by his son. One weird thing about his life - he was a bigamist, with 2 families. Talk about a glutton for punishment!

The unlikely romance between an African-American cleaning business owner (Denzel Washington) and Mina, an (eastern) Indian woman (Sarita Chowdhury) who is a refugee from Idi Amin's Uganda. While he's never been to Africa, she's never been to India. There is racial prejudice from all sides: African-American, Indian, white.
Roshan Seth and Indian screen legend Sharmila Tagore play Mina's parents.

In this British comedy, people pool funds which will be claimed by the last remaining survivor. Following a series of freak accidents, the last two survivors are brothers. Watch as their heirs battle among each other.
This hard-to-find comedy (Netflix doesn't carry it) features John Mills and Ralph Richardson as the brothers and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore as the conniving heirs. Michael Caine plays another heir. Peter Sellers has a brief role as a doctor whom Peter Cook and Dudley Moore approach to obtain a death certificate for their uncle.

Oh the days where knee socks were HOT as were matchy matchy plaid outfits. Clueless is like the girl movie of the 90's. Love it. Plus nothing says "clique movie" like making a chubby curly haired girl over.
