Carmen

Description
Yes, another adaptation of the Carmen story, this time adapted to a flamenco dance troupe and the relationship between the choreographer and a sultry dancer new to the troupe. Directed by Carlos Saura. Watch it back to back with Bizet's Carmen.

Bizet's Carmen

Description
Opera is stylistic by nature, but this filmed version of Bizet's Carmen is surprisingly naturalistic. Part of the credit is that this movie was filmed on location in Spain. However, much of the credit goes to Julia Migenes's earthy portrayal of Carmen. Also features Plácido Domingo as Don José , the soldier whom Carmen leads astray.

Description
Bizet's Carmen is recast with an African-American cast featuring Dorothy Dandridge as Carmen and Harry Belafonte, the soldier whom she leads astray. Uses Bizet's score, but Oscar Hammerstein II (!) created a whole new libretto appropriate to the setting.
Dorothy Dandridge was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role, the first African-American woman so honored. Fellow Clevelander Halle Berry championed her cause.

Forrest Gump

Description
Forrest Gump unwittingly falls into major events of the later 20th century and remains untouched. The character who really undergo changes in this movie are Jenny, the love of his life, and Captain Dan, who goes from being (slightly) psychopathic soldier to embittered amputee vet to a man at peace with himself. Forrest serves as the anchor to both these characters.
Gary Sinise was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Captain Dan, but lost. Shame on the Academy!

Small Change

Description
This French language film, directed by the late François Truffaut, is a series of vignettes about childhood. My favorites are the boy who has a crush on his friend's mother and buys her red roses (for passion!) and the policeman's daughter who takes advantage of his bullhorn. I first saw Small Change as part of a film series at the university I attended. Le petit Grégory, who falls from the window and isn't hurt (Grégory go boom!), was a favorite with the student audience

Breaker Morant

Description
Courtroom drama about three Australian soldiers who are court-martialed for killing POWs during the Boer War in South Africa. Edward Woodward, Bryan Brown, and Lewis Fitz-Gerald play the soldiers, and Jack Thompson is their lawyer Major Thomas, who has no prior experience in such cases and has been given only one day to prepare. Thomas puts up an unexpectedly eloquent defense, although the outcome in the trial is predetermined.

Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)

Description
Osama must have watched Fahrenheit 9/11: "We never thought the high commander of the U.S. would leave 50,000 of his citizens in both towers to face the horrors by themselves when they most needed him because he thought listening to a child [this was poorly translated from the Arabic as it had specified a female child] discussing her goat and its ramming was more important than paying attention to planes and their ramming of the skyscrapers which gave us three times the time to execute the operation, thanks be to God." - translated from video of Osama bin Laden released prior to 2004 elections.

Description
Dustin Hoffman plays a two-bit criminal who anonymously rescues victims of a plane accident. Geena Davis plays a TV reporter who has the only clue to his identity - the shoe he lost. He's picked up by homeless Andy Garcia, and tosses away his missing shoe. Andy Garcia presents the other shoe, as in a male version of Cinderella, and is acclaimed as the hero. Dustin Hoffman's character remains anonymous to others until he goes out on a ledge to talk with Andy Garcia, who's about to jump to his death.
This movie is fun on its own, but can also be seen as a reflection on media-created heroes

Description
Sometimes comic, sometimes sad - about Simon, a boy who can't grow and his friend Joe, who lives with his single mother. Ashley Judd as Joe's mother befriends Simon and dies tragically when Simon's foul ball hits her on her head. Her character arouses sympathy, and I developed a girl-crush on Ashley Judd that continues to this day. Jim Carrey has a brief cameo as the grown-up Joe.

Description
I loved this movie as a kid, and remember how shocked my parents were for paying $3 a piece to see this in its first run! It still holds up very well, unlike the Sound of Music, which now seems so - schmaltzy. Julie Andrews won Best Actress Oscar, and deservedly so - watch her as she departs from the Banks's home. Dick Van Dyke has a dual role as Bert the chimney sweep-cum-sidewalk chalk artist and elderly Mr. Dawes of Dawes, Tomes, Mousely, Grubbs Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. Also notable are Ed Wynn as Uncle Albert (I Love to Laugh) and Reginald Owen as Admiral Boom, who fires cannonballs from his balcony. There's a score full of terrific and memorable songs, including "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "Chim chim cheree"
