Pretty on the Outside: Unique Ways to Wrap Gifts - a list by tatorandtots
Options for This Page
About this list:
Traditional wrapping paper is fine. But it serves to disguise, not entertain. Presents often spend weeks poking out from under the tree- why not make them tease and taunt while they're waiting? Attach novelties like fake mustaches, funky stickers, notepads or printed-up folding paper toys, use great cards, give jewelry (and a loupe!) tucked into the cardboard in a roll of designer toilet paper, try garland not ribbon, roll a tie into a Troll glass and use boxes that will serve a purpose later!

Why do I love these? Because I'm a fan of kitsch and anything that reminds me of being back in the 80's instead of things that tap me on the shoulder and sneer, "Hey. You're 36. Time to be a grown-up."
The price is a bit stiff for a set of just two but for me, they're like mental Botox so I can justify it.

Message in a Bottle bottles

Description
Ok, it's summer. You need to have a party. Really. You do.
And to show everyone how fabulous you are before they even arrive, here's an ultracool and inexpensive invite idea. Grab a case or two of these bottles and swing by your local craft store for packs of teeny beach balls and/or paper cocktail umbrellas. Pick up a bag of sand and some cute computer stationary (they even make some with burned-out edges, like a pirate scroll). Voila. You're already cool and they haven't even sampled your ham roll.
FYI- there are a lot of fun twists on the treasure map theme for this.
FYI #2- get extras and fill them creatively- like vertical dioramas- to use as table decor
FYI #3- for party entertainment, set up a "craft table" with these, sand and a variety of fun and funky fillers for them. It's a great keepsake for your guests to take home. To remember, once again, that you are a fabulous host/hostess.
And you can get these with boxes, too. Hand-deliver the invites or just swing by the post office. They're quite inexpensive to send- just remember to not go all-out crazy with the sand if you're mailing them due to the weight. As with most things in life, a few inches will do you. Not all things, mind you. But most.

Scratch 'n Sniff Stickers

Description
Back in the late 70's/early 80's, I was the equivalent of a dealer on a street corner with scratch 'n sniff stickers. My fellow 2nd graders would meet me in the hallway before the first bell rang, I would pull out my trusty envelope of 'goods' and the transactions would commence.
Well it's true what they say about addictions running through the gene pool. My daughters both tend to sniff everything with gusto. Mostly things that are ok. We've had the "spray paint can" discussion, don't worry. But we are a family that likes to smell stuff.
And while dealing stickers might put a bit of spare change in my pocket, it isn't my true motivation for trying to bring back the scratch 'n sniff sticker craze. I just really love them to this day. So I pop them on presents, cards, etc whenever I get the chance.
If there are any "recovering sniffers" from the 80's like myself out there, here's a link that made me literally yelp out loud in delight:
http://www.bubbledog.com/sns/
"Bubbledog" has an online gallery of all the stickers we knew, loved and smelled from the 80's. Sad to say, but I literally teared up when I saw some of them. Wow did it bring back memories....
And one last link:
http://www.promobrands.com/scratchandsniffscents.htm
Promo Brands carries the world's largest variety of scratch n sniff scents (do the world a favor and avoid the 'baby poo' one please!) and promises that they can give an Eau du Whatever to any product you want. In other words, go to them if you have something you want to smell like something else.

Black & White Designer Bathroom Tissue

I LOVE this but at $7/roll there will be a sign in the guest bathroom warning of a strict "two square per person" quota. Maybe three if you brought me a cool hostess gift.
Speaking of gifts, this would be a great way to wrap some jewelry. Just tuck some tissue-paper wrapped baubles in the center tube then "roll the whole roll" in clear plastic cellophane, leaving an equal amount of plastic on both ends. Tie each end with colorful ribbons and ta da! It will look like a giant piece of candy!
