Mandala Custom Surfboard

Description
Take my word for it: There’s nothing like working with a shaper who’s passionate about surfboard building to get a board dialed for your skills and surfing style. This year, Manny crafted the perfect vehicle for my goals in the water, and now he’s starting to use the more environmentally friendly Homeblowm blanks in his shapes.

Leroy Grannis: Surf Photography of the 1960s and 1970s

Description
The first time I saw this Taschen coffee table book, it was only available in an autographed limited edition. I think Barney’s wanted $400 for it. Now you can get it for around $40. The saturated images of resin tinted surfboards, turquoise barrels, and bearded wave warriors are amazing, even if you don’t surf yourself.

Nau: Bunnygoat Hoody in Night Heather

Description
Super soft and simple. I love the combination of athletic elements—like the hood—with unexpected materials like cashmere and angora. I’m drawn to thoughtful details in clothing, like the ribbed areas on shoulders and within the hood.

Nau: Polo-lariat L/S in Bark
First to recommend
Description
As usual, the designers put a functional twist on a classic item. The engineered raglan shoulders are comfy and the silhouette is fitted but not too tight. Also, the bark brown’s an amazing color with denim. Instant staple.

Nau: Down Shirt in Sea

Description
The first time I saw the varying widths of the quilts on this I thought, “Wow, that’s a really cool take on a puffer.” Then I realized that there was a reason for the pattern: to keep key areas of the body warmer. Nice. Influenced by a shirt, the snaps on the wrist make it easy to get bunched-up sleeves of undershirts and sweaters back down.

Description
Things just seem to be getting better for the National. Anthemic choruses and mind-boggling percussion. Vocalist Matt Berninger’s Cohen-like passion and pitch are alarmingly honest. Knock-out album of 2007.

Patagonia R3 Wetsuit
First to recommend
Description
Made from 80% petroleum-free Japanese neoprene (with a patented merino wool wicking grid inside), Patagonia claims that they have made the most environmentally friendly and warmest wetsuit on the market. More slick skin is totally logical (less wind chill) and the high cost is justifiable when you consider Patagonia’s amazing warrantee program. Rumor has it that a hooded version’s on the way!

42 Surfboards

Description
Man, these boards are beautiful. Made of chambered Oregon fir or spruce, with no foam whatsoever, a stick crafted by 42’s Lars Bergström is built to last “for generations, not months.” I’d love to get one under my feet, and seeing how they are made in my home state, I just might. Buy local!

Hess Surfboards
First to recommend
Description
Hand made by Danny Hess in San Francisco, these beautiful wood/epoxy surfboards use half the fiberglass of conventional boards and greatly outlast traditional foam surfboards, which is the main selling point. Less is more.

nau cleanline jacket

Description
I actually wore this jacket skiing, canoeing, and surfing—all in the same day. Then I took it to dinner at my favorite restaurant in Portland. It was impossibly light, yet it kept me completely warm. It breathes great and is cut like couture.
