How To Make Your Little Sibling Cooler - a list by Andrea

Options for This Page

About this list:

Right off the bat, let me point out that yes, there are some hopeless cases in the cool department. Some kids are destined for coolness, and some of them are just, well, not. That said, there are ways you can help steer them in the right direction: my little cousin, for example, listens to talk radio instead of music - besides a little Hillary Duff here and there. For her birthday, I gave her "Graceland" and "Bayou Country", and next year she's getting "Sticky Fingers".

Qualifications:

I am a little sibling, and I am cool.

Yellow Submarine

Description

This psychadelic fairy tale combines the aesthetic of Peter Max, the dry wit of everyone's favorite four Liverpudlians, and a whimsical world that's perfect for children. When Pepperland is attacked by the joy-crushing Blue Meanies, the Beatles are enlisted to restore peace and happiness through song.

Converse All Star

Description

Why don't I have these yet? I've been a Converse naysayer for a while now - I've always thought they make your feet look weirdly long - but after trying on a pair just now, I take it back. They run big, so you can get a half size down and make your feet look smaller, plus they are SO COMFORTABLE I AM PRACTICALLY ASLEEP. ($42 at Zappos - with free shipping! I fit in an 8, in case anyone wondered)

Ed. note: Small children in Converse = cool small children. Put Chucks on your tiny sibs!

Description

For those who can't afford the Rachel Leigh gold whistle necklace. This tells a girl you think she's a free spirit who's also sort of bad ass, and that you want to take a road trip with her. Whoever gets it will definitely think of you when they look at it. ($7 at Fred Flare)

Tintin - The Secret of the Unicorn

First to recommend

Description

Tintin is one of the best adventure comics ever created. The originally Belgian series follows a boy reporter on his crime-solving adventures to Tibet, South America, and the moon! It somehow manages to be exciting and endearing completely devoid of sex, violence, or swear words, and although reading Tintin didn't prevent me from indulging in any of the three, it's definitely an awesome enough kid-gift that you still get to be the cool older sibling, but wholesome enough to make you feel responsible. ($9.61 at Overstock)

Animaniacs, Vol. 1

Description

It's important to develop a decent sense of humor in your youngster. That said, it's also important to let them maintain their innocence for a little while - how to reconcile the two? Easy: Animaniacs, possibly the best written kids' cartoon show ever which caters to both the infantile adult and mature child sense of humor. Guess which one I am?

Twilight Umbrella

Description

This umbrella is covered with blue LED lights, with settings that allow the lights to either glow solidly or twinkle like christmas lights, creating "a gentle galaxy of blinking lights". Hooray! As I've said before, umbrellas should not only protect you from rain, but allow you to forget that rain, or sadness, exist in the world. GENIUS!

Little Nemo in Slumberland: So Many Splendid Sundays!

Description

I know people use the term "genius" to describe stuff like Project Runway these days, but when I say Windsor McKay was a genius, I mean like the Einstein Da Vinci Beethoven kind where you look at his drawings and see your own dreams. I am serious. Also, this is the best coffee table book ever, because it is actually coffee-table sized. Just add legs!
