Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't

4 people recommended this item

Description

This is one of my favorite business books because the key principles are based on exhaustive research and culled from the most successful companies in American history. The research team analyzed the traits of failing and successful companies to determine what systems, controls, and leadership characteristics were present in each. The findings aren't earth shattering (things like focus, attention to detail, and nurturing top employees) but the collective impact feels actionable. I believe wholeheartedly in the teachings of this book.

Leadership Is an Art by Max Depree

First to recommend

Description

This is one of the first books I picked up on leadership and management many years ago and it's still one of my favorites. The book flips on its head the classic notion of a leader who sits in an ivory tower, enjoying perks, leaving the office early, and delegating all the work to his subordinates. Rather, the practice of "servant leadership" demonstrates that true leadership is about sacrifice, working for the benefit of others, leading by example, and doing everything possible to help subordinates be effective and successful.

The First 90 Days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels

First to recommend

Description

This book was recommended to me about five years ago and I've used it for my transition to my last two jobs. I found it to be a practical yet invaluable resource. None of the concepts are earth shattering but the framework is sound and it works. I firmly believe the track record you establish in your first 90 days is telling for your tenure with an organization. Getting started on the right path is essential to your personal success. I own and recommend this book.

High Hopes: Taking the Purple to Pasadena

Description

Ok, so you want to know what a book about football written by a career coach has to do with business. The answer is everything. Gary Barnett pulled off what may be the most unbelievable feat in college athletics by taking perennial cellar dwellar, Northwestern, to the top of the Big 10 rankings for not one but two years in a row. I happened to be in graduate school at Northwestern at the time of this feat. The book is all about leadership and developing a culture of winning. The lessons are timeliness and can be easily applied to businesses of all sizes. I own and highly recommend this book.

I realize some people may "think" this book is fluff or not meaty business material. However, this is one of my favorite business books of all time. I have read it three times and I always find it motivating. I firmly believe in the core principles inside. This book is for anyone who dreams of being an entrepreneur, attaining a goal, or simply having more control over their life and future. I own and highly recommend this book.

How to Win Friends & Influence People

4 people recommended this item

Description

Like most good works of art, this book is timeless. The principles inside are as relevant today (if not more) than they work over 75 years ago when it was first published. I realize some of the delivery is corny but if you focus on the core principles you will form better relationships--at work and home--and that is the key to success in life. I own and highly recommend this book.

The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century

4 people recommended this item

Description

This is a terrific book that explains the macro socioeconomic and geopolitical issues which are shaping the world. Thomas Friedman describes core trends which define today's global economy and goes into detail to explain the power shift in consumption and production, driven mostly by India and China. Most of the points are obvious but it's still startling to realize just how massive some of these changes are--and will be--and how the world we work and live in will change.
