Board Games! - a list by GadgetGuy
Options for This Page
About this list:
A ton of fun retro old-skool board gaming that can put your Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 3 to shame. Actually, it's not that hard to shame the PS3, but you catch my drift. Roll those dice, baby!
Qualifications:
I once beat everyone at Hi-Ho Cherry-O when I was a kid.

Abalone
First to recommend
Description
Abalone was voted "Game of the Decade" by some astute game masters who saw the inherently simple, yet fun addictiveness of this game played with black and white marbles. You try to push five of your opponent's marbles off the edge of the playfield. Simple and fun. (via FunAgain)

Apples to Apples: Party Box

Description
This bizarre game leaves the scoring entirely up to the judge, who changes from round to round. Give bizarre, serious, and silly answers to the questions, and if the judge picks your answer that round, you win a card! Collect a certain number of cards, and the game is your. Really fun for people who want to look smart, and people who like making fun of other people. (via FunAgain)

Carcassonne

Description
This is one of those games that seems slightly too nerdy when you read about it, but it's one of the best two player games I've ever played. It revolves around developing areas around an established trade route, and then trying to control these areas. I just realized, I can't make this sound amazing in print, but try it ... you'll love it. (via FunAgain)

Cranium

Description
Cranium is one part Trivial Pursuit, one part charades, one part artistic talent, and one part wacky. If you put 'em all together, you end up with this board game that is fun at any party, from 9 years old to 90. My favorite is sculpting stuff with their weird purple clay. I hope that stuff is non-toxic *burp*. (via FunAgain)

Settlers of Catan

Description
This complex strategy board game requires extensive set up, lots of time to learn, starts off very slow, and takes an hour or three to complete a game.
And yet, it's somehow addicting. I've seen adults and kids both spend hours upon end playing Settlers of Catan and not get tired of it.
Just make sure you have a large empty area (preferably a flat table) and a couple hours free before you pull it out from the games cabinet.
Once you (or your kids) get addicted, you may be tempted (begged) to purchase some of the extensions and add on sets that make the game take even longer to finish.
Minimum age for kids to enjoy this game is probably around 8-10.

Snatch Word Game
3 people recommended this item
Description
Snatch is one of those incredible simple games that ends up being loads of fun. It's similar to Scrabble, in that you use tiles to spell out words, but it has the added advantage of being able to steal your opponent's words. For example, if they spell "hatch" you can drop a b on the h and make it "batch" and take those points. Scrabble with backstabbery. Sign me up. Oh, and it comes in a handy carrying tube, too.
