Description

'Derek Vinyard" (played by Edward Norton, in his Oscar-nominated performance), with a swastika tattoo and a mind full of hate, has inherited racism from his father, and that learning has been intensified through his service to Cameron (Stacy Keach), a grown-up thug playing tyrant and teacher to a growing band of disenfranchised teens from Venice Beach, California, all hungry for an ideology that fuels their brooding alienation.

The film is a must-see if only for Norton's performance.

The Damned (1969)

Description

Directed by Luchino Visconti and starring Dirk Bogarde, Helmut Berger and Charlotte Rampling, this brooding and atmospheric movie depicts the rise of nazism as reflected within a decadent German industrialist family.

Helmut Berger is unbelievable as a young nazi, blong and beautiful but extremely complex, evil and devious. I hightly recommend.

Crumb (Special Edition)

Description

I remember seeing this documentary and being absolutely in awe at the genius of Robert Crumb. Robert Crumb is known for his disturbing underground cartoons such as Fritz the Cat, and this documentary offers a fascinating glimpse into a very strange mind. Interviewing immediate family--Crumb has one suicidal brother, one semi-psychopathic brother, two sisters who declined to be interviewed, and a tyrannical mother--Crumb begins to look a bit saner.

Not to be missed.... (via warmfuzzyinc)

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE - Jennifer Hudson
ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND EDITING

Based on the 1981 Broadway musical comes Dreamgirls, a story of greed, tough hate, and romance. Three young women Deena Jones (Beyonce Knowles), Effie White (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell Robinson (Anika Noni Rose) desire to become pop stars and get their wish when they're picked to be backup singers for the legendary James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Then they're set free for leads, but James, Curtis Taylor (Jamie Foxx), and Effie's brother C.C. (Keith Robinson) decide for Deena to be lead which upsets Effie.

A fabulous movie with an incredible score, great performances and gorgeous sets.

The Night Porter (1974)

Description

Charlotte Rampling is one of my favorite actress and in 'The Night Porter', she plays a concentration camp survivor who, thirteen years after WWII, meets her tormentor (Dirk Bogarde) in a Vienna hotel and falls back into their sado-masochistic relationship.

This was a very shocking movie when it first came out as it is a love story dipped in decadence directed by Liliana Cavani, the well-known director.

An Angel at My Table (1990)

First to recommend

Description

This is one of my absolute top favorite movies. This extraordinary film, directed by Jane Campion (The Piano) is based on the life of Janet Frame, an introverted, sensitive girl who was later misdiagnosed as schizophrenic and spent eight years in a psychiatric hospital.

She would later become one of New Zealand's most celebrated poets and novelists, publishing her first books while she was still confined to a mental ward. She had endured over 200 electroshock treatments and had almost been lobotomized by careless physicians who took no time to understand that she was merely awkward and shy and suffered from little more than routine depression.

Fascinating film, visually gorgeous and inbelievable performances. An absolute must-see!!

Three Musketeers (1948)

First to recommend

Description

This is a wonderful boisterous, raucous, romp through the Alexander Dumas Novel. It is beautifully photographed and brilliantly paced. Gene Kelly's performance as D'artangan is fabulous. One of the great swashbuckling film adventures of all time. It veers slightly from the novel, but captures it's essence. A terrific movie, much better than those versions that followed.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: DVD: William Dieterle,Charles Laughton,Cedric Hardwicke,Thomas Mitchell,Maureen O'Hara,

Description

Charles Laughton is Quasimodo, the misshapen bell ringer of Notre Dame, who saves the beautiful, Esmeralda, a gypsy dancer, accused of murder. He swoops down from his perch high above Paris, and brings to the sanctuary of his tower. This the best film version of Victor Hugo's classic novel.

55 Degrees North - Series 1 And 2 [2004]

Description

This is one of our favorite british TV series in which an ambitious detective, DS Nicky Cole (Don Gilet) tries to make a name for himself so he can get off the night shift and back onto days. Along the way he makes friends with the CPS Lawyer, Claire Maxwell (Dervla Kirwan).

Set in Newcastle, the series is fabulously written, well cast and the story lines are impeccable. My favorite character is the DI Bing played by the wonderful Mark Lewis Jones, who plays the character as blunt and tactless and always says what he thinks - even when he shouldn't.

Description

Robert Mitchum as the frightening Rev. Harry Powell. While in prison, he learns of hidden money from his cell mate, who he leaves dead in the cell. He infiltrates the dead man's family, kills his wife, and pursues the children, in hopes, of finding the money. This is one of the most scarey, dark, foreboding movies ever. Directed by Charles Laughton.
