Of Human Bondage (1934)

Description
Abandoning artistic ambitions, sensitive and club-footed Philip Carey (Leslie Howard) enrolls in medical school and falls in love with illiterate waitress Mildred Rogers (Bette Davis). She rejects him, runs off with a salesman and returns unmarried and pregnant. Philip gets her an apartment and they become engaged. Mildred runs off with another medical student. Philip takes her back again when she returns with her baby. She wrecks his apartment and burns the securities he needs to pay tuition. He gets a job as a salesman, has surgery on his foot, receives an inheritance, and returns to school where he learns Mildred is dying.
Adapted from Somerset Maugham's novel of the same title, the movie is notable for giving Bette Davis her breakout performance. She is electrifying as 'Mildred' and Leslie Howard is perfect as the senstive and clubfooted Englishman.

Description
A starkly original film-going experience based on a true life story, this film from New Zealand director Peter Jackson is a stirring drama that offers up the unexpected.
The story concerns two girls, outcasts who become best friends, whose bizarre fantasy life becomes more intense as their bond becomes increasingly more obsessive. When the mother of one of the girls tries to intervene and split the girls apart, they kill her and stand trial for murder in what is to this day still a celebrated and controversial case. Kate Winslet (Titanic) and Melanie Lynskey create two sympathetic and yet uncomfortably eerie characters in riveting portrayals.
A thrilling and provocative movie, 'Heavenly Creatures' is a gripping entertainment and a must-see.

Primal Fear (1996)

Description
Clever twists and a bona fide surprise ending make this an above-average courtroom thriller, tapping into the post-O.J. scrutiny of our legal system in the case of a hotshot Chicago defense attorney (Richard Gere) whose latest client is an altar boy (Edward Norton) accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop.
The film uses its own manipulation to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice.
Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology--his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of credibility, Norton milks it for all it's worth.
This movie is an absolute must-see for Edwad Norton's performance....

Outcast of the Islands

Description
Carol Reed's film of Joseph Conrad's novel depicts a man's overpowering desire for a beautiful island girl. Trevor Howard is brilliant as Willems driven to the point of total isolation and despair. Taunted by his peers and the children. It is very powerful and emotional. This film deserves to be rediscovered.

Description
Another one of our favorite movies is 'Cold Comfort Farm'. Directed by award winning director John Schlesinger, this brilliantly witty film stars Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor) as Flora Poste, a London society girl, and Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous) as Flora's friend and mentor. This heartwarming comedy is full of charm and clever satire. Recently orphaned, Flora ignores the sage advice of Mrs. Smiley (Lumley) and moves to the country to live on a decrepit farm with her eccentric relatives. Fancying herself a writer, Flora encounters perfect material for her novel in the humorously odd collection of rural characters. In her own inimitable way, Flora insists on creating order out of their chaos, and in the process, she fills their lives with light and laughter. Also starring Rufus Sewell (A Knight s Tale), Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings), Stephen Fry (Peter's Friends) and Eileen Atkins.
An absolute jewel of a film - not to be missed!!

God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of Lost Boys of Sudan (2006)

Description
I cannot wait to see this documentary which is exec-produced by Brad Pitt and narrated by Nicole Kidman. I had gotten familiar with these boys in a documentary on TV and found it fascinating.
This is a captivating documentary about the orphaned, displaced "lost boys" of Sudan, which follows three of them as they carve out separate lives as adults in the U.S.
