About this list:

This list is going to be short on personal recs, heavy on consumer and industry-related reviews. Basically, just a concise list of what the top consumer magazines are calling the "Best of...." in their category for the 2008 Holiday season. Hopefully, it'll help you narrow down your options if you need a great camera/camcorders in a hurry.

From Consumer Reports "Top 100 Products" Issue:

CR's Take
Produces images with excellent sharpness, although we did notice visible noise. Performs very well, with very short next-shot delay and short first-shot delay. Excellent dynamic range lets you shoot in a wide variety of situations. It also includes an optical viewfinder, which can be helpful when composing in bright light.

Highs
Very good image quality and dynamic range. Very short next-shot delay and short first-shot delay. Has a maximum ISO with best quality of 400. Includes face detection and optical viewfinder.

Lows
Camera design places flash too close to where you hold the camera, possibly obstructing the strobe. (via Consumer Reports)

12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Category: Compact point-and-shoot camera

From Consumer Reports' current "Top 100 Products" Issue

Versatile and feature-laden, this top-rated 12-megapixel compact offers much more creative control than a typical compact. Its optical viewfinder is helpful for composing in bright light when an LCD might be impractical, and the swiveling LCD makes it easy to get tricky shots. (via Consumer Reports)

MiniDV High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Category: High-definition camcorder

From Consumer Reports' current "Top 100 Products" issue:

One of only two HD camcorders we've seen with excellent picture quality, yet it costs less than most. Low-light quality was good, and its image stabilizer was excellent. Records on MiniDV. Unusual for an HD model: a built-in light and input for recording from analog devices. (via Consumer Reports)
