Amelia reconsidered - a list by hanahula

About this list:
Amelia Earhart, best known as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, was also a fashion pioneer. Her embrace of menswear paved the way for women who favor pants, clean lines, and hardworking wardrobe staples. And in a season in which pants, leather and the Jazz Age has infiltrated the runways, she has never been more au courant. I now reconsider her as if The Gap had been around in her time; I think it would have been her go-to store.

Piperlime: Women's Swansea Hooded Vest by EMU Australia
First to recommend
Description
It is hard to imagine Amelia without her signature bomber, but I think she would have eagerly embraced the freedom of movement that this leather vest provides, along with its longer length, detachable hood and fabulous faux fur trim.

Gap: Women's soft floral scarf
First to recommend
Description
I have an indelible image of an aviatrix flying full throttle with her scarf trailing behind her . . . this orange beauty fits that image with a burst of twenty-first century color bravado.

Barnes and Noble: Read My Pins by Madeleine Albright
First to recommend
Description
Style matters. And accessories speak, crossing boundaries that sometimes the most well-conceived speeches fail to reach. No one understands this better than Madeleine Albright, scholar, diplomat and author of "Read My Pins."

Gap: Women's favorite T-shirt bra

Description
A working bra that confidently, unobtrusively makes the most out of your existing assets. No lace, no itch, no complicated straps, just graceful support . . . and just the beginning of a great outfit.

Gap: Women's dark denim shirt
First to recommend
Description
A denim shirt that takes just a few cues from the men's version, but adds a few feminine finishing touches. And the cuffs are ready for accessorizing with links. I think Amelia would have had one for every day of her busy week.

Gap: Women's tweed trouser pants

Gap: Women's ribbed henley T

Layers are stylish, but also practical: to be peeled off as air and temperature vary. And this henley is particularly sharp layered under a denim shirt.

Another layering maestro: tights. In a delicate knit blend, they are not too heavy and just the right foundation for a long day's journey.
