Local Hero (1983)

Description
I didn't get this movie the first (or second) time I watched it. Somehow, though, I must have known deep down that there was something there, because I watched it again when it showed up on cable and I finally started to get it.
Now, I've seen Local Hero probably a dozen times and expect to continue enjoying it, especially in my old age.
Put aside any expectations, relax, and prepare to be bored out of your mind by Local Hero the first 2 times. Eventually though, perhaps you too will be laughing out loud and wiping away tears as you escape into MacIntyre's world.

Never Cry Wolf (1983)

Description
Another slow, beautiful, relaxing movie with subtle humor and real-to-life characters and situations.
Oh, yeah, there are a couple moments that will bring out the more primal emotions in you.

Description
It's not just the Spanish with subtitles that is confusing you, this movie is complicated, and like many of my picks deserves to be watched again with the knowledge you learned from the first viewing.
In case the title didn't clue you in, this is not for children.

Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)

Description
I'm sure many people would argue this is not a classic. But it is! It is! Some of Meg Ryan's best work, and the story is a wonderful parable. (via esh)

Description
What folks in one part of Los Angeles do when they hear that a nuclear missile is on it's way. This movie is dated, but the human reactions are not.

Memento (2000)

Description
An awesome, one-of-a-kind revenge film. Leonard (Guy Pearce) would like to kill the man who raped and murdered his wife — if only he could remember who did it. Coping with his lack of short-term memory by tattooing clues onto his own flesh, he becomes a walking map of revenge, transformed into a monster that literally cannot recognize in the mirror the man he used to be. If this is what you get when engineers become filmmakers, then we need more. Fantastic low budget independent movie. Loved the beginning; loved the middle; and am still trying to figure out the ending (though I am positive I'll love it after I've watched it a couple more times). Thanks to Joe for the recommendation. (via joe)

Avalon (1990)

Description
This movie is long, slow, and has very little action, but if you're prepared for this you'll enjoy the many dramatic moments that are created in the lives of this extended imigrant family.

12 Angry Men (1957)

Description
You know it's the writing and the acting that are keeping your attention, because there's no action, no set to speak of, no special effects, and not even any color. Made in 1957 and still gripping, insightful, and relevant.

The Age of Innocence (1993)

Description
This is my favorite period piece for whatever era this takes place in. Ok, perhaps it's the only one I've ever even bothered to take the time to see, but Age of Innocence has ended up as one of my favorite movies. I think what draws me the most is the incredible visuals, the depth of colors, and the richness of details. My favorite scene is when the camera pans over the long dining table set with an incredible array of dinnerware and food. I can't put my finger on why, but it moves me. I think I'm drawn to long, slow movies where not much happens.
