About this list:

Regardless of your political affiliation (or lack thereof), the success of the Obama campaign has demonstrated that grass roots activism - the intellectual input of everyday people - is incredibly powerful. I hope that we keep this marvelous momentum moving forward, with projects directed and developed by people of any age and every background. My goal ? To make a list to encourage, motivate and applaud those who aspire to improve the lives of individuals, communities, and/or the world.

Barnes and Noble: American Sublime by Elizabeth Alexander

First to recommend

Description

Some argue that Elizabeth Alexander's "Praise Song for the Day" was more poem than verse, but I was deeply moved by both her words and her reading of this ode to Barack Obama on the day of his Inauguration as the 44th President of the United States. And, although I am neither poet nor poetic scholar, I will be certain to get a copy of "American Sublime": a hefty sampling of Alexander's work. A little poetry, a little history, a little hope and a lot of originality.
