About this list:
Regardless of your political affiliation (or lack thereof), the success of the Obama campaign has demonstrated that grass roots activism - the intellectual input of everyday people - is incredibly powerful. I hope that we keep this marvelous momentum moving forward, with projects directed and developed by people of any age and every background. My goal ? To make a list to encourage, motivate and applaud those who aspire to improve the lives of individuals, communities, and/or the world.

Where Have All the Leaders Gone? by Lee Iacocca
First to recommend
Description
More than a call to arms, this is a no-holds-barred condemnation of the state of the nation by one of the world's foremost turnaround artists. We may not like how he says what he says, but Iacocca makes some salient points and, in so doing, gives us a beacon at the end of this recessionary tunnel.

Amazon: Free to Be...You and Me by Marlo Thomas and Friends - 35th Anniversary Edition
First to recommend
Description
My cousin Katie (although she was too young to realize she had done so) first introduced me to this book. I already knew and loved the "That Girl" Marlo, who strode down a city street in go-go boots; spun around in glee; and threw her hat in the air at the beginning of each episode. She embodied freedom, it seemed to me then . . . and now, as she re-introduces her book to a world still struggling to deal with all the different ways both girls and boys, men and women express themselves. Adding more contributors to her merry tribe of singers, writers, poets and comedians, Marlo Thomas' book is now bigger, better and perhaps even more relevant today. And wouldn't it be great if the first one who smiled really did win?! Good gifting.

Barnes and Noble: Traffik by Norman Jean Roy and Marianne Pearl
First to recommend
Description
Inspired by the work of Somaly Mam (author of "The Road of Lost Innocence" and an honoree of Glamour magazine's 2006 Woman of the Year contest), photographer Norman Jean Roy visited Mam's ongoing project within her homeland of Cambodia. Mam, sold into sexual slavery earlier in her own life, works to rescue, educate and empower girls as young as seven years old, as she also battles to bring an end to the growing problem. Using his professional skills to capture the spirit of these girls, as well as the their suffering, Roy hopes to bring greater awareness and aid to Mam and the girls she has embraced. By purchasing this book, you will help to change lives. Perhaps even your own.
