BeiMoDian

First to recommend

Description

Opened in 2002, Beimodian (pronounced bay-more-dean) claims title of the only forum in the U.S. exclusively dedicated to high-style Asian contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories. Designs are distinguished by soul-calming minimalism, fine construction and innovative applications of traditional craft. The lighting collection is small but memorable: narrow, low-slung table lamps with satin and rosewood bases (another series effectively enshrines the lamp wire in an open-sided box), and a remarkable Ping floor lantern with full-height shade. Nicholas Furrow

First to recommend

Description

Nicholas Furrow was a freelance designer in Milan before opening his Brooklyn lighting studio in 2002. Nowadays, his engagingly eccentric designs "provoke materials with lighting." His Alchemist floor lamps, for example, "borrow" laboratory funnels, kitchen strainers and traffic cones in their cast bases. The Red Light District collection shown here first took shape when a basement full of red and amber glass shades were left at Furrow’s disposal. The morphic shapes and intense colors were created by stacking and gluing the shades and inserting an LED of the same color down the center. Clever, and even a little sexy. (via Elements of Living)

La Murrina

First to recommend

Description

Started 40 years ago on the island of Murano, La Murrina represents the perfect marriage of traditional and contemporary. The lighting and design company’s glassblowing masters combine bold, innovative designs with time-honored Venician techniques, helping them appeal to those in both the classic and cutting-edge camps. Indeed, La Murrina’s flexibility and striking designs have attracted some of most renowned designers in the world. No less a modernist than Philippe Starck used this black Veneziano chandelier in his YooD4 residential building in Boston. In addition to their fine artistry, La Murrina custom-sizes each piece. Richard Wrightman

First to recommend

Description

Richard Wrightman learned his craft while working for an architectural fabrications firm. Two years ago, he introduced a line of furniture inspired by the classic British colonial officer’s chair, a utilitarian piece of furniture with elegance to spare. The collection now consists of 12 pieces, and he continues to add to it. Wrightman makes each piece to order in his Long Island City, NY, workshop, and offers full customization. His other, equally impressive line of furniture (inspired by mid-twentieth-century modern designs) can also be customized. (via Elements of Living)
