Jean de Merry

First to recommend

Description

Jean de Merry, an award-winning French novelist (pen name: Jean Claude Libourel) from a family of leather tanners, and Christian Maroselli, a graphic designer, opened their custom-furniture store in Beverly Hills, CA, two years ago. It specializes in high-end, handmade, leather-upholstered armchairs. All pieces are made to order, and Jean de Merry also accepts new commissions. De Merry and Maroselli, who collect French Art Deco furniture, began their joint venture when they were asked to find similar furniture for friends. "Over time, we found it increasingly difficult to find Art Deco pieces," says Maroselli. "So we decided to have one-of-a-kind pieces hand-crafted by artisans, and our custom-furniture company was born." Products are available through the shop and the company website. Bettencourt Woodworking

First to recommend

Description

Bart Bettencourt’s interest in furniture design stems from the days when his father, a contractor, took him to job sites in the Boston area. About four years ago, after working on exhibition installations in the woodshop of the Guggenheim Museum, Bettencourt opened his own furniture design and custom-cabinet-making shop in Brooklyn. He uses only green building products such as bamboo (considered the ultimate renewable hardwood substitute). "My work is a marriage between innovative design and protecting nature," he says. Bettencourt’s furniture can be fully customized. He also welcomes commissions. (via Elements of Living)

Maine Cottage: Colorful, Contemporary Furniture and Home Furnishings

First to recommend

Description

Sixteen years ago, Maine Cottage founders Peter and Carol Bass sensed a need in the marketplace for colorful well-made furniture. "Peter and Carol saw brightly painted furniture in magazines and figured out that those pieces were found objects painted for the photo shoots," says David Petersen, Maine Cottage’s VP and general manager. "There was no place to buy the pieces, so they set out to manufacture real furniture with simple architectural lines in fun colors." The Yarmouth, ME, company offers complete customization of its wooden pieces and 40 paint colors; they will also work with custom colors. All dimensions can be changed, and wooden accent pieces and knobs can be interchanged. Limited customization of colors and fabrics is available for their upholstered and wicker furniture. Maine Cottage furniture is sold through showrooms across the country. (via Elements of Living)

Luke Raymond

First to recommend

Description

While studying industrial design at the University of Michigan in the mid 1990s, Raymond took part in a class sponsored by Corian, which challenged students to design furniture from the company’s material. The experience redirected his career toward custom-furniture design. Last year, after fashioning furniture for a lobby designed by New York City’s Rockwell Group, Raymond was hired as a designer by the renowned firm. Despite his day job, which itself often includes furniture design, Raymond frequently crafts furniture for private clients. Much of his work reflects the time he spent on Long Island Sound as a boy. “Growing up on and around boats has influenced my work,” he explains. “Boat design requires a sense of beauty and function that I try to incorporate in every piece of furniture I create.” All of Raymond’s pieces are made to order.
