Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is an International NGO engaged in the creation of a large-scale international unarmed peacekeeping force, composed of trained civilians. In partnership with local groups, NP members apply proven non-violent strategies to protect human rights, deter violence and help create space for local peacemakers to carry out their work.

Our vision is to create a large-scale nonviolent peace force through the development of models for field deployments, public education, training and advocacy

NP launched its first joint project in Sri Lanka in summer 2003 at the invitation of -and in partnership with- local groups. More than 64,000 people have been killed and 1.6 million displaced in the civil war that has ravaged Sri Lanka since 1983. NP Sri Lanka Project has now acquired, by January 2007, a staff of more than 50 individuals, both local peacekeepers and international professionals.
In 2005 NP began working on the field start-up of additional projects in the Philippines, Uganda and Colombia. Beside those countries, in 2007 our teams have provided a rapid response to Human Rights Defenders’ request for accompaniment in Guatemala.
