The Story of Stuff with Annie Leonard

First to recommend

Description

Ok, who hasn't seen this video yet? For those that haven't...DO IT. We are all stuck in our little world of shopping, storing it within our four walls and throwing our trash out to the curb, but there is so much more to the picture. Where did the stuff come from and where does it go? WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STATE OF OUR WORLD. You don't have to be an environmentalist to realize that Americans are very careless with the soil, water, and air we have. How very selfish and self-absorbed to think society and future generations are not impacted by our choices.
The video is about 20 minutes, but it is presented in such a simple, clear, and entertaining way - you'll want to watch it more than once!

Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety Database

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

The website is really a pioneer in cosmetic safety. I've been using it for well over a year. We all assume what we put on our skin is safe, but there is no oversight for safety. What this website does is arm the consumer with information so they can make an informed decision. Ingredients are listed for each product (not all brands are included because there are so many) and the safety for each ingredient is evaluated. The product is given an overall number, with higher numbers being more toxic or unsafe.
For those that want to watch what we put INTO our bodies, why would we not watch what we put ON our bodies? These chemicals do not stay sitting nicely on top of our skin, eyelashes, or hair ---they are absorbed into our bodies.

Environmental Working Group Foodnews.org

First to recommend

Description

If going organic seems too intimidating, start with what is termed the "Dirty Dozen". The "Dozen" is the first twelve on EWG's list of fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide load (peaches being #1). If shopping, AT LEAST, buy these organic. The last twelve are the "safest" (#45 being onions).

It's a start, but it encourages awareness of what you are eating.

Although, I look forward to shopping at the farmer's market every week (when it's in season). You are most likely buying organic there AND supporting local farmers. Your choices matter!

Plenty Magazine - Environmental News and Commentary

First to recommend

Description

This magazine is the BEST - I'm going to cancel my Smithsonian, just to get it (don't want to get more paper than I have).
The articles are great and best of all...the advertisements aren't supported by some gas guzzler - they are actually sustainable and green ads. Very nice

What's Your Solar Potential? - RoofRay

First to recommend

Description

Find out how much you could be saving with solar!

Enter your address and a satellite image of your house appears. Add solar panel spots and the angle of your roof and the program calculates how much you would save monthly, on your electric bill, if solar panels were added.

I couldn't get the right electric company to pop up, but I got an idea anyway. Perhaps if I signed up, it would be more accurate. (via Treehugger)

Slow Food International | good, clean and fair food

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Slow Food is a non-profit organization that promotes local food, knowledge of where our food comes from and how our choices affect the rest of the world.
I can't put it any better, so this is what they say. "Slow Food is good, clean and fair food. We believe that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.

We consider ourselves co-producers, not consumers, because by being informed about how our food is produced and actively supporting those who produce it, we become a part of and a partner in the production process."

How Clean Is The Electricity I Use? - Power Profiler

First to recommend

Description

So cool. Plug in your zipcode and this EPA website will inform you on where your area obtains its energy.
For example, mine reads that we get 73% of our energy from coal (I can't help where I am. Ohio is a big coal state! How terrble). What's worse is that it compares your coal consumption to the nation's (50%). Yikes! We use 23% more coal than the national average! Ok, anyway, Gas (2%), Nuclear (23%), Hydro (1%), non-hydro renewables (0!).

To boot, we exceed the national averages for carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.

Please visit this site. We need to be informed on our state of energy, especially with all the talk in election and media. Do yourself a favor and become informed! (via Ideal Bite)

Green Power Network: Buying Green Power: Can I Buy Green Power in My State?

First to recommend

Description

This is yet another tool to every person that wants to arm themselves with the power of knowledge. A U.S. Dept of Energy website allows you to see what kind of green power is available through different companys.

Again, for me, I found out my I can donate $1.40 per month to the power company for them to invest in renewable energy. However; I also found out that that program will expire in December. (via Ideal Bite)
