Paper Straw Shoulder Bag at World Market

Description

A woven beach bag just screams beach vacation. I love this one: it packs well and comes in classic or fun colors, at a very affordable price. It’s so fab, it can easily flow into use as a nighttime purse, as well…as long as you don’t drag sand across the restaurant floor with you.

Oregon Scientific’s MP121 MP3 Player

First to recommend

Description

I don’t like to worry about getting sand or water on my Ipod, even with one of those protective cases, so, instead, I keep the MP121 packed in my suitcase, loaded with vacation tunes. It’s totally waterproof, as are the headphones, so I can float on the water with my favorite music, worry-free…which is what beach time is all about: no worries. It even has a radio if I want to tune into the local airwaves, and a pedometer if I feel like a morning run.

Black Cat’s Eye Sunglasses from Daddyos

First to recommend

Description

The huge sunglasses that everyone’s wearing nowadays are no good for sunbathing because they hide half your face! Cat’s eye sunglasses are a way to still look hip and retro, while allowing the sun’s rays to leave slightly more forgivable tan lines. Plus, plastic frames that fold flat are a bit more durable for travel.

Espadrille Sandals

First to recommend

Description

I know I’m in the minority here, but I hate crocs (ugly!), and I hate flip-flops (fall off!). A better travel sandal, I think, is the espadrille. They are THE shoe of the summer season this year. The 3-4” wedge w/ cutout toes are the sexiest for us gals, but since I’m already 5’10”, my wearing those just makes people scared of me. Old Navy’s espadrilles are one of the only affordable flat options out there--and flat is so much for comfortable for dancing or strolling on vacay. Choose white to go with everything.

Sarongs

First to recommend

Description

Everyone worries about how they look in a bathing suit; a sarong is the best cover-up--for men AND women--because it covers the ugly bits, while still looking sexy and beachy. It’s also uber-versatile: one sarong can be used as a dress, skirt, towel, halter-top, turban, scarf, blanket, or shawl. They’re so small and lightweight, I usually bring two and use multiple ways on my trips. I’ve gotten all mine when traveling in Bali, but Curious Designs Retail offers a lot of traditional styles as well as solid colors and offbeat designs, all online.

Bare Escentuals’ Junior Lip Guards SPF 15 Set

First to recommend

Description

On the beach in Greece once, I used a lip balm that I had just received in a party swag bag. It was cloudy and cold, I was out there just a couple hours--but, by the next day, my lips had turned into two big blisters. The balm had mucho oil and zero SPF in it. Now, I tell everyone to wear lipstick with SPF when on the beach. Bare Escentuals’ mini-lip gloss set is GREAT for travel: you get 6 sun-inspired colors, all travel size, all with hydrating aloe vera and shea butter, plus nourishing vitamins A, C, and E, and SPF 15--all for just $36.

Travelon’s Instant Shaving Gel

First to recommend

Description

This was one of my favorite discoveries at this year’s Travel Goods Show. For smooth, hair-free skin on the beach, don’t bother lugging a can of shaving cream for pre-beach touch-ups. MAKE shaving cream by mixing water with a pill. Travelon came up with the idea when liquids were restricted for carry-on luggage last year. With this “instant” gel, you get five pills to a container, plus mixing cup. (You provide the water.) They also have instant mouthwash and tooth gel. Genius.

Olympus Stylus 770 SW Digital Camera

First to recommend

Description

The klutz in me doesn’t want to worry about ruining my electronics when on the go, so the Stylus 770 SW is perfect for beachy getaways: it’s waterproof, shockproof, and crushproof, AND has a Hypercrystal LCD…OK, I don’t really know what that means, but I do know it allows me to see my pictures clearly in the bright sunlight and even underwater. Perfect to capture, and share with any newfound vacation chums!
