Ram by Paul & Linda McCartney
First to recommend
Description
I've adored Paul McCartney since I was a little girl - I remember making my mom take me to go see "Give My Regards to Broad Street" when I was six, and then playing the 45 for "No More Lonely Nights" over and over on my Strawberry Shortcake record player. Anyway - I bought "Ram" this summer after hearing it at a party, and it's been one of my favorite records of the year. Favorite songs: "Monkberry Moon Delight," "Smile Away," "Dear Boy," "Long Haired Lady."

Desire by Bob Dylan

Description
I've had this record forever but for some reason I never really got past "Hurricane." And then earlier this year I read an interview with Jenny Lewis in which she said something about how "Desire" is one of her favorite records, and now I can't stop listening to "Isis" over and over. I'm listening right now, in fact.

Rabbit Fur Coat by Jenny Lewis

Description
Although certain loyalties established when I was about 11-years-old preclude me from naming anything other than the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Stadium Arcadium" as my favorite album of 2006, "Rabbit Fur Coat" by Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins comes in as a very much beloved close second. I've got no excuse for taking so long to realize what an amazing songwriter she is, but for some reason this record grabs me so much more than anything I've heard by Rilo Kiley. Favorite tracks: "What Loves You Back," the brilliant cover of the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care," and "Happy," which is so good that I can't even listen to it anymore.

Christmas by Low

Description
For anyone who likes his/her holiday songs all moody and indie-rock, this is the CD for you. "Just Like Christmas" is my favorite, a staple of holiday mixes year after year. (via The Late Greats)

Desert Doughnuts by Metallic Falcons

Description
"Desert Doughnuts" by Metallic Falcons is one of the most genuinely weird records I've heard in a very long time (just look at the cover, for gawd's sake). But there are some really beautiful moments, such as on the song "Snakes and Tea" (my favorite track). Probably you'll either love it or hate it, or maybe you'll just be really creeped out by it. Ys by Joanna Newsom

Description
Before "Ys" I was sort of on the fence about Joanna Newsom; now I heart her with all my love. I think this is probably the only time in my life that I'll be obsessed with someone who plays harp.

Cripple Crow by Devendra Banhart

Description
For some reason I resisted Devendra Banhart for a long time, but then I finally gave in and soon ended up downloading all of "Cripple Crow" from emusic. It's so pretty and summery; I especially love the songs sung in Spanish. Favorite track: "Little Boys."

Achtung Baby

Description
I grew up with U2, and "Achtung Baby" was probably the first album of theirs that I came to on my own (rather than through my parents' influence). This one's my favorite record of theirs 'cause it's DARK and romantic and sexy and weird. I had the hugest crush on Bono around the time of "Achtung Baby," but now I sort of regard him as the kind of vaguely hip, endearingly obnoxious uncle who you'd sneak outside with to smoke cigarettes during boring family functions (or something).

Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York

Description
Nirvana's Unplugged session was recorded six days after the only time I ever saw them live. I like to save this record for when it's really cold out and I can just hide under my covers and drink tea and, you know, brood.

Ritual De Lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction
First to recommend
Description
Ritual do lo Habitual is one of my favorite albums ever and probably has lots to do with why I moved to Los Angeles (for reals). I still remember the day I bought it, at some lame chain record store in the mall when I was 13 or so - the music kind of scared me but I loved it automatically. It was a drag to discover Jane's Addiction right when they were breaking up, but now I respect the hell out of them for stopping at three really great records and then calling it quits.
