Dirty by Sonic Youth

Description
I think "Dirty" was the first Sonic Youth album I ever bought (although for a long time I listened to it on a cassette taped dubbed from my best friend, and for some reason the sound only worked on the left speaker). I was 14 and just starting to get into music that wasn't played on top 40 stations, and "Dirty" made me feel like I might be cool. The record still sounds really new and exciting to me, almost a decade and a half later.

Description
I've got issues with Kathleen Hanna, but for some reason I never get tired of Le Tigre's first record. It's superfun and makes me want to make stuff, which is a valuable thing indeed.

Marie Antoinette - The Soundtrack

Description
I've never been too into that New Romantic stuff, but the "Marie Antoinette" soundtrack has totally sold me on Siouxsie & The Banshees, New Order, Bow Wow Wow, and all those other bands. I'm especially obsessed with "Natural's Not In It" by Gang of Four, which mostly has to do with Sofia Coppola's brilliant use of the song in the film's opening credits (the shot of Kirsten Dunst getting her toenails done and dragging her finger through the cake frosting = one of my favorite movie images ever). London Calling: The Clash

Description
I'm not a girl who's into dreaming up lots of rules and requirements for prospective suitors, but there is one absolute dealbreaker that I cannot let slip: If you're a boy and you don't love The Clash to death, then - sorry - it's just not going to work out. And no, I don't want to be just friends either. (via esh)

Young Machetes by The Blood Brothers
First to recommend
Description
I love the Blood Brothers so much, which makes me feel like maybe I'm actually a 15-year-old boy. They're skinny little brats who scream a lot and do terrible things with their guitars, but you can also dance like crazy to them. I don't have "Young Machetes" yet, but their last album "Crimes" was probably one of my top five records of 2004.

Automatic for the People by R.E.M.

Description
I've been revisiting Automatic for the People lately; it takes me back to my freshman year of high school and makes me really sad that the Michael Stipe/Kurt Cobain collabo once talked about never got to happen... (via Kyle du Ford)

Jay-Z "The Black Album"

Description
As I write this shopcast, I'm actually listening to Jay-Z's The Blueprint rather than The Black Album - but choosing a favorite between the two is kinda like trying to choose your favorite child (or something). If I didn't have Jay-Z, life would be so much less good. (via KRiSTOPHERDUKES)

Ex Hex by Mary Timony

Description
Mary Timony is maybe my favorite musician of all time. I've seen her play live too many times to count, but I'm guessing I've been to about 20 shows since first seeing her ex-band Helium open up for Sonic Youth in 1996. This is the most garagey, stompiest, hardest stuff she's ever done, but it still has lots of pretty guitar melodies and lyrics that sound like they're straight from some weirdo storybook.

C.Y.S.L.A.B.F. by Mika Miko
First to recommend
Description
Mika Miko - five girls, super-young, crazy-high energy, very prone to shouting - are so one of the most exciting things about L.A. right now. Their record's been out just a little over a month, and already my favorite song ("Capricorinations," an MP3 of which you can hear if you click on the "Shop for this at" link above) has made it to the top 5 most played on my iTunes.
