Shaun Deller Cycling Hats
First to recommend
Description
Made by hand with 100% wool and cotton fabrics that used to be shirts and sweaters. A small local business that is simple in concept and execution, with attention to its environmental impact at every step of the process. The styles are sharp, too, whether you’re sporting the hat on a bike or on foot.

Terra Plana Shoes
5 people recommended this item
Description
Shoe company based in the UK. I’ve had a pair of their shoes, the Doll, for a year and half, and it’s the most comfortable and durable little black pump that I’ve ever owned. Also garners the most compliments on the street. The company is very transparent about its own approaches to sustainability, community, and business ethics. Their shoes are built with materials like chrome free leathers, vegetable tanned leathers, recycled materials, pure latex soling materials, recycled rubber soles, and recycled foam footbeds.

Description
I’m not pregnant and don’t intend to be for many years to come, but this business model is cool: Well-designed maternity wear made from sustainable fabrics that the mother can recycle after having the baby by shipping the product back to the company. The returned pieces are donated to a nonprofit that works with young mothers in need.

Zalud Wrist Cuffs
First to recommend
Description
Made by Martin Zalud and Alicia Zaludova. Martin apprenticed with a saddler for four years in his native Prague. The designs are timeless yet distinct, and each piece is hand sewn. Old world meets modern lives, or as they say on their site, “history in craftsmanship – future in design.” I met Martin at the Bellevue Arts Fair this year, and there’s a healthy dose of humility in there, too, which is always refreshing.

COMET Skateboards

Description
I don’t pretend to skate anymore, but my friends who actually do skate were just telling me about this company that’s building boards with sustainably harvested woods and water-based, low-VOC final coatings. Their website is very intelligent and well designed, too.
