Description

M.I.A.'s electronic hip-hop / soca / reggae style is well needed in this over crowdedness of fake commercial music and RAP industry. It's a refreshing sound of hip-hop in its purist form.

Just listen to her music to judge for yourself.

Pop Music ~ Iggy Pop

First to recommend

Description

One day some one might ask you, "hey, what is Iggy Pop?" and if you have listened to this collection of Iggy classics your reply might look something like this--your jaw will probably drop to the floor, your eyes will roll back into your head, and you'll most likely loose consciousness before hitting the ground. Yeah, something like that.

The Best of Heaven 17

First to recommend

Description

It was at that boat in Paris--the one that has all the live shows and parties--and the sun was rising as the deep-fried leftovers of last nights party slowly emerged on deck, making their way towards cars, public transport, nearby trees, ditches, or a curb to climb into, and all the wile as my zombie friends and I crossed onto land I could hear a beautiful song playing over the sound system to bid our crowd good-bye, but what was it, what was this blissful Soul Music? For years I thought that it must be the The Isley Brothers, or some forgotten gem from The Temptations, and then one night I heard it again, this time on my radio in Brooklyn, so waited breathlessly through 5 other songs and a station break before the Dj finally revealed the name of the f%&#@ing song and the band name which I never would have guessed--"Heaven 17"!!?

Heaven 17 is a band I turned my back to long ago, never ever expecting to enjoy anything they might offer. Hmm...So what could I do, I when and picked up a copy of "The Best of Heaven 17" and was surprised at how much I loved their early songs, and lucky for me the song I'd heard in Paris was actually on the album. I tip my hat boys.

Get Ready ~ New Order

First to recommend

Description

The collision between British musicians and Black American music has produced an ever growing treasury of limb-pulsing, butt-shaking, hart-swelling music, which--thankfully is often the result of soul-brothers and sisters made from the most unlikely sort--case in point, New Order. In "Get Ready" New Order ditch the temptation of dance-floor stagnation for what seems to be a reach for that mythical pop radio sound--dead since the late 80's--guess what, the idea turns out well. "Get Ready" a hybrid of post-punk-pop-and-b push songs you can sing (even when you don't know the words), music and melody that seem so familiar that you'd think they are pop standards.

About the cover design of "Get Ready", at the time gave New Order a much needed youth fueled look firmly placed in the now, yet over the years this image of a young woman holding a consumer video camera will look less of the now, and more of the then, the then you missed out on, the then that was really cool. Nice work :)

Exposure ~ Robert Fripp

First to recommend

Description

Exposure contains a kind of unspoken darkness within Fripp's choice of song structure, instrumentation and vocalists. The result is a series of music acts which twitch inside a skin of hybrid jazz-pop lotion, often transcending the 80's sound-picture into a kind of jazz vocal daisy chain, and yet always collapsing back into it. I happen to like the sound of alienation from time to time, Exposure dose it for me.

Noteworthy tracks:
You Burn Me Up I'm A Cigarette
North Star
Exposure
Here Comes The Flood

Two Hunters ~ Wolves in the Throne Room

First to recommend

Description

This is the album that opened my ears to Black Metal. From the opening movements of "Dia Artio" (track one) though to the album's final track "Two Hunters" quickly crosses into sonic worlds belonging to neighboring music genres, and continues the crossing cloaked in many colors taken from Nordic song, shoegazer guitar, and contemporary composition. Wolves in the Throne Room are creating a familiar yet new facet in the process designing a gem like sound and what strikes me is that with each new music invention an epic sound-scape is born in the wake of it.
