Cadbury Chocolate Flakes

First to recommend

Description

Every year when I go back to Ireland I get a request from all our Irish friends on this side of the pond- BRING BACK FLAKES. BOXES AND BOXES OF FLAKES! Sigh. I literally load up on cases of chocolate at duty free on my way home. Thank god they're now available here. So those of you who always ask? Bugger off.

Now, once you've secured this most gorgeous of candy products, what can you do with it? Well, eat it comes to mind. But be careful- the name is a clue. It really will flake and crumble in your mouth and, if not careful, all over your clothes.

Or crumble it all up and sprinkle it on ice cream for a tasty treat. And if you make it over to the Emerald Isle, stop by one of the many petrol stations with a big fake cone in front and ask for a "99"- that's a soft-serve vanilla cone with a Flake poking out a la the picture I added. Yum.

Robinson's Orange Barley Water

First to recommend

Description

No, you don't taste the barley, silly.

And whatever you do, don't forget to DILUTE it before you drink it!

I'd always have a 'glass of orange' when I'd come home from the pub or to start the day. Sometimes the timing of those was a bit too close for comfort. But I digress. Great stuff, this. Great stuff.

McVities Milk Chocolate Digestives

First to recommend

Description

My absolute favorite of the McVities' cookies- the milk chocolate digestives. Horrible name, that. "Digestives." But the taste? Oh my god, delicious. Here's the trick- dip them in a hot cup of tea juuuust long enough (maybe 2-3 seconds) to get the chocolate a bit melted but NOT long enough to make the cookie soggy or it will fall into the cup. Yep. It's an art form.

Robertson's Lemon Curd

First to recommend

Description

If you're not used to lemon curd on toast, this may be a bit on the sweet side for you. But for those of you from England and Ireland... well, you know how delicious it is.

It can be used as filling for tarts and pies as well, fyi.

Cadburys Chocolate Buttons

First to recommend

Description

The first thing my kids do when we get off the plane in Ireland every year is race for the airport shop at Shannon to load up on all the treats they've been living without in the States. Buttons- both the milk chocolate and white chocolate varieties- are one of the top two favorites. The other? Cadbury's Chocolate Flakes. Yum.

Bird's Custard Powder

First to recommend

Description

Add milk and sugar and voila! The creamiest, yummiest custard ever. I use it for Irish trifle- layer fresh berries, jams, custard and pound cake sprinkled with sherry (of COURSE there's booze in it. Did you expect otherwise from me?).

Bird's is the only "real" custard on earth, in my opinion....

Heinz Salad Cream

First to recommend

Description

If I had to choose a "last sandwich EVER," chances are it would have Heinz salad cream on it. No longer do I have to cart it back from Ireland- it's delivered straight to my door these days.

Irish bacon + tomatoes + Brennan's toasted white bread + salad cream = foodgasms
