environmentally conscious - a list by mademoiselle_a

About this list:

Back in the 80's, Germany saw a wave of eco shops, muesli, eco food and recycled paper... long before anyone else would even care about "recycling" and "eco". Oh yes, I was one of those kids who used recycled paper exercise books and eco pencils, and I still shop at eco stores. If the 80's were good for something ... then definitely for that. ;)

Cup Cozy

First to recommend

Description

Just found this Etsy shop that sells these cozies for your coffe to-go. Having a reusable cozy is a start in reducing all the needless waste out there (step two: refuse the single-use cups and lids, bring your own!).
I like the look of these and the clever design - you can carry your cozy rolled up and securely hooked onto your keychain if not in use.

(Attention, international buyers - the shop unfortunately ships to very few European and international locations. I suggest you convo them before your purchase and check for mailing rates.)

Mes Habits Chéris | Shopping Bags

First to recommend

Description

Mais oui, I quite like winter -snow, glitter and rosy cheeks and all- but this shopping bag has me yearning for spring, you know...

Designed by Madame Mo. of madamemo.com, sold at Mes Habits Chéris in France, this shopping bag is made from 100% eco cotton and measures 50cmx55cm. Comes with a tiny bag to keep this in when not needed (or, to keep it handy and neatly folded to tuck in your handbag!).
Seriously though, this design is almost too cute to ever tuck it away, don't you think?

Bioland Bauernhof Karsten Ellenberg | Farm Ellenberg, ecologically farmed potatoes

First to recommend

Description

Germany has seen one of the most upsetting fights about potatoes when "Linda", most favourite type in Germany, was prematurely taken off the market to be replaced by a genetically manipulated and industry-optimized new type of potatoe. As a baseline, this means that corporations and greedy plant breeders, not customers and farmers, decide what we should eat and what is good for us - should it be like that?

Don't let the greedy corporate world dictate what's to have on your plate and what not. Biodiversity, not industrialized, genetically manipulated clone foods that looks all the same, is what makes regions and farmers successful and ensures healthy eco systems.

Educate yourself about the things that make it onto your plate, become a critical customer, support local farmers who refuse to be part of the huge industrialized, standardized-foods machinery.

Slingfings | Kimono Jacket

First to recommend

2 people recommended this item

Description

Slingfings is based in New South Wales (Australia) and makes some of the best bags and clothes I've seen (it all started with their original slingfings bags) - all handmade and produced locally at co-workers' homes, environmentally concious thanks to using solar power when sewing, and all fabrics are reclaimed and recycled.

Read their "about" to learn more, and browse their collections.

Happy Earthday!

Greener Solutions (UK)

First to recommend

Description

I noticed them when they teamed up with the German postal services and sent out envelopes for free cellphone recycling. I sent them my old and first cellphone (though...) for recycling.

Manufactum | flowerpot scrubber

First to recommend

Description

If you're a gardener, you should not go without this scrubber. It's made from wood and Bahia bristles (Bahia piassava is a palm), one of the sturdiest natural bristles available.

Thanks to their sturdiness, cleaning pots from soil and dirt is really easy with this scrubber. It ensures that no germs nest in the pots and ruin the upcoming gardening season.

The best: there are no metal or synthetic parts about this scrubber!

Solarserver.de | solar cells-driven garden torch

First to recommend

Description

This is a great idea for when you need subtle lighting outside, to show the way into the house or along a path. The solar cells collect light, and the torch has a sensor that switches the torch on as soon as it gets dark.
Alternatively, there are also torches that can be switched on and off to one's liking.

Why still waste precious energy when solar cells can do so much better?

Manufactum | Swiss Army messenger bag

Description

This is brilliant - messenger bags made from recycled Swiss army wool blankets.
Nice design and look, water-repellent and with extra compartments, e.g. for pencils and cellphone.
