Ghosts I - IV: Nine Inch Nails

Description

Wonderfully atmospheric release from Trent & Co. All instrumental, an oddly, very relaxing. Yes, it has it's heavy moments, but overall the tone is much more sedate than you'd expect from NIN.

Jesca Hoop Music - Kismet

Description

When the sticker on the CD is a quote from Tom Waits saying that listening to this album is a bit like running through a forest, you kinda have to get it just to find out what in the heck that means! I'm still not sure, but I do know that it's a really great little record. Intelligentactile 101 is my favorite track. Popy and freaking weird.

It's a Bit Complicated: Art Brut

First to recommend

Description

In Nag Nag Nag Nag, the lead singer laments that he's grown up now but refuses to learn that certain things, like music obsessions, refusing to be seen in jeans rather than trousers, are adolescent concerns. I hope he never learns. Smart pop music, with a bit of snark, or is it sincerity? Because who hasn't broken away from a kiss to turn up a good tune? (the theme of the album's first track)

Waterloo to Anywhere: Dirty Pretty Things

Description

I loved the Libertines and was sad when they broke up. It made sense, but was too bad. I was psyched to hear that Carl Barat was going to keep playing with a new band. It's a shame that DPT doesn't get the same exposure as Pete Doherty's band, Babyshambles, as musically, I think they're much tighter. The songs are similar in sound to the Libertines: tight, rocking, fast-paced. Good solid album, and the follow-up is expected to be released in June

Picaresque: The Decemberists: Music

3 people recommended this item

Description

This is the album that thrust the Decemberists into a more public light and got them a contract with a major label. Great record filled with strange songs of ornate intricacies. It's worth buying just for the epic "Mariner's Revenge Song", guaranteed the best sea shanty you've heard in a long time.

The Libertines - The Libertines

Description

The prototypical british indie rock band. Great hooky songs and witty, sometimes scathing lyrics. The reason why anyone cares about Pete Doherty, he used to make really great music. This proves it.

The Libertines - Up the Bracket

Description

The first album, the one that put them on the map. Not as strong as the follow-up, but a great solid British indie rock album.

Because what good is an Emo Pirate list without EMO tracks for the pirates to whine to? And Caroline mentioned "Then you definitely have to throw in one or two Decemberists albums (their most recent one isn't quite as pirate-y as earlier releases like "Picaresque" or "Castaways and Cutouts."" So here is one of many options for your emo pirates listening pleasure!

I'm Not There (Original Soundtrack) [Bonus Track Version]

First to recommend

Description

One of the best soundtracks of the year, in my opinion. Tons of great artists covering their favorite Dylan tracks. Standouts include Karen O (from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) doing "Highway 61" and Cat Power singing "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again". It's an indie all-star cast of singers, capped with the man himself singing "I'm Not There". (P.S. be sure to buy the iTunes version. It's $2 cheaper than amazon and comes with 3 extra songs)

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

First to recommend

Description

Of Montreal makes crazy, sample heavy, gorgeous pop music. The lyrics are fascinating and literary, and the music is dance-able and catchy. "Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse" is probably one of my favorite songs and song titles of all time.
