Almost Killed Me: The Hold Steady

Description

Great Saturday night record. Full of energy, killer guitars and wordy lyrics about teenagedom. Not a huge fan of Crag Finn's delivery in some of the songs, much more shouty-yell than the later albums, but the lyrics are so killer you can't help but love the songs anyways. If you need to get pumped, this album will certainly do it for you.

The Tigers Have Spoken: Neko Case

Description

Live music can be really hit or miss. Sometimes you can capture the energy of a performance, and sometimes it sounds like a bad copy of the band's studio release. Thankfully, this album falls into the category of the former. If you like good alt.contry performed in the cozy bar of your choice, then you'll like this album.

Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man Soundtrack

First to recommend

Description

A star-studded tribute concert to one of the world's must under-appreciated singer-songwriters. Not every song from the movie makes into onto this collection, but with songs done by Rufus and Martha Wainwright (joined by their mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle), Nick Cave, Beth Orton, U2, Jarvis Cocker and others, it's a terrific album filled with jems.

Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys

3 people recommended this item

Description

Conceptually, this is a strange album. Produced by Johnny Depp, sung on by Bono, Nick Cave, Loudon Wainwright, and Adrianne Corr (among many others) it sounds like a rag tag bunch of people on paper. But when you're singing pirate ballads, that's exactly what you want. And that's a mighty-fine list of fellows.

Send Away the Tigers: Manic Street Preachers

First to recommend

Description

I never got into old Manic Street Preachers albums (although I do find it inherently cool that Lucien Freud did an album cover for them), so I can't say how this stacks up to their prior work, but I can say how much I love this album. It's got a boatload of really catchy songs. Heck, even "Rendition" is catchy, which is surprising given it's titular subject material. Yes, there's some heavy-handed messages in some of the songs, but "Underdog" and "Indian Summer" more than make up for it to me.

Employment: Kaiser Chiefs

First to recommend

Description

I love catchy British rock. Hooky songs with dirty guitars and clever lyrics. Great chant-along-choruses. Sometimes it sounds a bit 80s nostalgic, thanks to a bit of overzealous synth activity, but it's such fun. Everyday I love it more and more.

Yours Truly Angry Mob: Kaiser Chiefs

First to recommend

Description

Some bands falter on their second album, and some bands take the opportunity to make and even more kick-ass record. The Kaiser Chiefs capitalize on their strengths of writing catchy tunes with great lyrics, but take it to another level. A bit more accessible than the first album, with less of the 80's-ish overtones. Terrific British rock record.

Muse, Black Holes and Revelations

Description

I love Muse. There's something amazing about their blend of big guitars, classical piano, and massive bass lines. More dancable than previous records, and continuing their maturation into their own unique sound.

Fox Confessor Brings the Flood : Neko Case

Description

Her songs are beautiful and her lyrics are progressively transforming. There's really not much more to say about that besides that this is an album everyone should have in their collection.
