In Rainbows ~ Radiohead

9 people recommended this item

Description

Radiohead happens to be my favorite band, but it still took me a long time wrap my tentacles around "In Rainbows". I shouldn't be surprised. That happened with a couple of their other albums, too. But today, I turned on my computer, played it and fell in love. Roughly over a year after I first downloaded it. My mind defies explanation...

Tom Yorke's falsetto hasn't changed much. The yearning is still there. Especially on tracks like "Nude" and "15 Steps". Lyrics resonate for me again like "How come I end up where I started, How come I end up where I went wrong..." So true, so true. Alien synthesizers echo, kids shout from samples --- marvelous. Man, I love this band.

Queen Margot (La Reine Margot) (1994 Film): Goran Bregovic

First to recommend

Description

Upon watching the soundtrack of the film "Queen Margot", I was immediately struck by the music. The opening track called "Elo Hi" is sung by Ofra Haza and is simply stunning. It's undeniably the standout track on the disk. The other tracks are by Yugoslavian composer Goran Bregovic. They are eclectic and beautiful. You are transported to another time and place. Frank's Wild Years - Tom Waits

Description

A serious album to drink and remember to...alone. Or perhaps with one other friend that REALLY likes Tom Waits. He is definitely an acquired taste. To some, his voice is like "nails on a chalkboard". I find his sometimes strained growl endearing, reassuring and authentic. This album is dreamy...hazy and tastes like the best dirty martini you have ever had. (via deepdiscount.com)

Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions

I have no kids. This CD helps me to sleep. Every night. If I can stop my brain from filling in the lyrics to the songs, and get over the fact that the music kind of sounds like creepy circus music. However, it seems to work for me.

Erran Baron Cohen Presents: Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah

First to recommend

Description

I just listened to snipets of about five songs from this album on NPR's "Fresh Air". It made me want to go out and immediately get this album. I mean, not being Jewish, I don't really celebrate Hanukkah, but being an American I'd like to think of myself as being open to celebrating all holidays. At least that's that way I look at it.

The reason for me wanting the album was that I thought that the music was very good. It's a mix of traditional, rap, and world. Plus, unless it's something new and different, you can simply get burned out on most of the Christmas music that is played in department stores, when you're on hold, on the radio, etc. When does one hear any other type of seasonal music? An album I have obsessively listened to for years. Creative brilliance. Depths of despair. Feeling paranoid, depressed, analoged and misunderstood? This is the record for you.

Sigur Rós :: Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

3 people recommended this item

Description

The sound of Iceland's experimental Sigur Ros first left an impression on me back in the late 90's when I heard a track from one of their first albums on a late night radio show. It was like nothing I had heard before. A mix between the piercing vocals of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Gregorian chant. I don't really know. Anyway, it left an immediate impression and never went away. I always paid attention when I heard them mentioned from then on, but never managed to lay my hands on an album. Go figure.

With the release of their latest album "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust" (literally meaning "With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly"), I was determined to finally own one.

What I have finally been able to experience is a dreamy and atmospheric series of soundscapes, supported by bouncy rhythms, and Jon Birgisson's soaring and sometimes heartbreaking falsetto. Dark minimalist tracks. Lush orchestral arrangements. Content is hard to pin down, due to the fact that lyrically Sigur Ros sticks to their native Icelandic tongue. That is, with the exception of their first all English track at the end of the album. The music is exceptional in its ability to move you emotionally. Even though I can't understand the lyrics, I've definitely become a fan. (via deepdiscount.com)

How It Feels to Be Free: Nina Simone

First to recommend

Description

I picked this album up at a Starbuck's on a whim. I already loved Nina Simone, and had a compilation of her's. This one turned out to be the best one I have heard. All I had come in for was a Soy Cappucino.

Nina Simone sang gorgeous bittersweet songs that combined her influences of folk, blues, soul and and jazz with politically relevant messages. Her rich, mahogany voice is a emotional force to be reckoned with. The tracks on this album range from Bob Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" (which is amazing) to her deeply soulful rendition of "In The Dark". This album sets atmosphere with the beginning and finish of every track. She always remained an original and gives true meaning to the word "artist". (via amazon.com)
