Kid A: Radiohead
First to recommend
Description
In 2000 Radiohead presented a new musical face to the world. It was eerie, dissonant and marvelously complex. It was Kid A. I won't go through any complicated discussion of what I think they were trying to do here. That would maybe be pretentious and unnecessary. I'll leave that to rock critics and such.
This album may not appeal to some --- even so-called "die hard" Radiohead fans, but it does stand on it's own merits artistically. I didn't even reach this conclusion until after several listens without any distractions. However, to each his or her own. As one of the songs states, "everything in it's right place..."
Standout tracks: "Everything In It's Right Place", "How To Disappear Completely", "Optimistic", "Idioteque". (via amazon.com)

This album was not even on my radar and was all of a sudden one of my favorites during the 1990's. It was (and is) pure unadulterated infectious brilliance! In terms of hip-hop just sheer innovation. Just about everything else at the time was boring in comparison. I think it's one of the best hip-hop albums of all-time. (via amazon.com)

Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York
7 people recommended this item
Description
"Unplugged" contains some well done renditions of favorite Nirvana songs ("About A Girl", "Pennyroyal Tea", "Come As You Are"), as well as surprising (and ultimately terrific) covers specifically, "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam", "The Man Who Sold The World", "Oh, Me" and "Lake Of Fire".
I've always thought that they could have come out and done a basic "greatest hits" session and gotten away with it. Considering how big they were at the time. However, they came out and showed remarkable creativity, versatility and just rocked. (via amazon.com)

The Odd Couple: Gnarls Barkley

Description
Not only is this a well-crafted album, but it jams! I would be very disappointed if it just happened to be popular for one year because of an extremely catchy song ("Crazy"). Then disregarded through pop culture's famous tendency towards flakiness. This album deserves to be reinvented and more than that --- revisited, often. (via amazon.com)

Deep Sleep: Brain Wave Subliminal (Brain Sync Series) (Brain Sync audios): Kelly Howell

Description
Ever have trouble sleeping? I recommend this. I don't normally go in for New Age music, but there's something about this CD that works for me. There are certain levels of sleep that a person has to go through to feel rested upon waking. I wasn't experiencing that. So, on the advice of someone that I trust I tried this inexpensive tool. All I know is that after about 40 minutes of relaxing music tops --- I'm out cold. Good enough. (via amazon.com)

Welcome to Jamrock by Damian Marley
6 people recommended this item
Description
Not your mother's reggae. A sophisticated, eclectic mix constructed over hard-hitting Jamaican grooves and spars with R&B and hip-hop. It references Marcus Garvey, Exodus and Eek A Mouse. There are a couple of tracks that don't mesh with my own personal views --- but overall it's thoroughly refreshing. (via amazon.com)

Debut: Björk

Description
There are many adjectives that can be used to describe this appropriately-titled debut work of Björk: quirky, electric, organic, erotic, enthusiastic, sensual. All of these words and others point to a collection of songs that stand the test of time and genre, to form a wonderful mixture sure to energize and please.
Standout tracks include: "Human Behaviour", "Crying", "Come To Me", "There's More To Life Than This". (via amazon.com)

The Very Best of John Coltrane: John Coltrane
First to recommend
Description
A pretty good Coltrane primer that is only missing a few good tracks to be "complete" for a decent introduction. At least to his Atlantic recordings. But with songs like "Central Park West", "Naima", "Giant Steps", and "My Favorite Things" it's far from bad. (via amazon.com)

Alabama: MP3 Downloads: John Coltrane

Description
Written after Coltrane heard Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speak about three young girls that had`been blown up in a church in Alabama. It is said that Coltrane heard "music" is Dr. King's words. You can tell when you listen to this piece, even if you aren't a big jazz fan. It is filled with a brooding intensity that paints a grim picture with sound. (via amazon.com)

The Best Of Nina Simone: The Colpix Years
First to recommend
Description
I bought this album years after listening to one of my Mom's Nina Simone cassettes. There are a couple of duds on this CD ("Wild Is The Wild", "It Don't Mean A Thing") but there is absolutely no one like Nina Simone. You will constantly hear people say this --- it's only because it's true. She was a true artist. A marvelous vocalist and pianist. The great cuts on this record make it well worth the purchase.
Standout tracks include "(I Loves You) Porgy", "Work Song", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Solitude". (via amazon.com)
