Description
This is a chilling and suspenseful drama/ horror from Guillermo Del Toro (Hell Boy/ Pan's Labyrinth) about a boy in a haunted orphanage during the Spanish Civil War.

The French one the whole seem to produce some outstanding films. This pair is representative of that. I won't bore you here with a break down of the plots or story lines. I'll just say that these films are unforgettable, compelling and modern masterpieces (especially the first --- the second is "the revenge film").
If you like happy-go-lucky movies that evaporate from your thoughts as soon as the credits roll, you may as well look elsewhere. If you appreciate films of dimension that are rich, no matter what their final commentary is on human nature, then you will love these. They should be seen together as complements. (via amazon.com)

Where to begin? The story of a lone samurai and his toddler son that have become "demons of Hell". An unstoppable fighting duo, that cross country seeking vengence for the acts of betrayal committed against them. A stoic, shabby looking samurai pushing a baby cart, containing his equally stoic looking son. That only skims the surface. I had better finish this recommendation after I have had some sleep... I think I need to watch this film again in order to give it a proper review. However, it is more than worth watching. Even if you generally find yourself turned off by older films. I saw this many years ago before I had the words and intellect to pull apart what it really meant it's different levels. However, it did leave a personal impression on me, even at such a young age. I think that is the mark of a great film.

This is an amazing, gritty thought provoking film that has one thing in common...dogs and love (dysfunctional love). Not for the faint of heart however, especially if you have trouble with scenes of animals fighting. I would recommend this film to anyone bored with your typical Hollywood blockbuster. I do not tend to think of myself as a fan of the horror movie genre, much less of the zombie subgenre. However, I really enjoyed 28 Days Later. It's probably because I am very much a fan of the "last humans alive at the end of the world" features and this film did an excellent job of portraying one of these scenarios.

Description
One of my favorite films of all times. Stanley Kubrick's 1971 futuristic, "ultra-violent" masterwork where youth gangs roam the streets victimizing ordinary citizens and rumbling with one another.
Based on the brilliant novel by Anthony Burgess, this stylish film takes on larger societal and political themes, such as crime and punishment, scientific testing and research on inmates and basic human free will versus a "safer society".
Some of the scenes may be difficult for more sensitive viewers to take, due to their unflinching and stylized violence. However, in this film, violence is not portrayed just for its own sake. It is used to illustrate larger themes. You are not allowed to take your eyes away. Much like the anti-hero, Alex, later on in the film, when he voluntarily is subjected to experiments. During which his eyes are strapped open.
This is a classic that is not to be missed. With terrific performances by Malcolm McDowell and Patrick Magee, and the entire ensemble cast. Nominated for four Oscars in 1972. The accolades for this film are many, including The New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Film and Best Director.
